Did I overpay on income tax?

in Cutting tax
Hi,
I'm not very good at this whole tax thing, so apologies if I'm being stupid but I was just wondering whether I have overpaid on my income tax for the tax year 2011-2012.
I started a job at the beginning of Dec 2011. I earn £16,000 per annum, but obviously as I started this job part way though the year I didn't earn that during the last tax year. Under the 'pay' section of my P60 it says £6408 and under the 'tax deducted' section it states £782.
This is my first job in a few years as I was out of work due to an illness. When I started this job (and consequently came off benefits) I got a letter from the DWP stating that in the tax year 2011-2012, up until the date I started working, I was paid £3,387, of which £3,282 is taxable.
So basically what I am thinking is that my total income for the last tax year was £9,690, of which only £2,220 is taxable (once you minus the £7,470 personal allowance), so I therefore should have only paid around £440 in income tax. However, like I said, I'm not really that clued up on how taxes are worked out so I have no idea whether I am right or not.
A couple of other bits of info:
-I'm under 65 years old
-My tax code for last tax year was 747LM1 (which I gather is an emergency tax code?- for the new tax year it is now 810L).
Thanks in advance,
C.O.G.

from the info you have provided, yes you have paid too much tax
the M1 at then end of 747LM1 prevented you getting the full year's allowance
phone up HMRC and explain the situaion; have your documents to hand0
