If it helps in the debate the recipient of the application is listed in the job advert as "Recruitment Team".

    "Dear Recruitment Team"???

I honestly believe we're all over thinking this, and can only hope as much effort is going into the content of the letter as is going into the opening line!

    That's a bit casual.

It also possibly sets the tone for the covering letter. I would go with 'Dear Recruitment Team' too.

'The 'Sirs' does not refer to any employee, but to the Directors of the company.'

That assumes it's a Ltd company.

I don't think it matters all that much, either 'Dear Sirs' or 'Dear Sir or Madam' are formal, polite and good business openings.

I grind my teeth at 'Dear Sir' though, as that does assume it's landing on the desk of one man (and it's my desk and I'm not a man) and I find that presumptuous.

Also 'hi' and similar are NOT appropriate. Nor is signing off with 'bye bye' (as recently received). I really despair at some of the letters we get.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
