Car Insurance cancellation FEE arguement

I recently changed insurer for my car and as normal the new insurer required proof of my no claims.
The new nsurer is an online only company with no contact number so all contact is done via email.
The day before I went on a weeks holiday I sent proof of No claims to them as required (4th JULY), they state when you upload it that if the proof you provide is inadequate they will inform you within two working days. I checked my email on holiday a couple of times and when i return home, no email so as most would do I assumed there was no issue, yesterday i receive a message stating that due to giving inadequare proof my policy is cancelled and I am charge a cancellation fee.
As I had heard nothing back could not understand why it was inadequate so emailed them stating that I had NOT been informed that more proof was required.
their reply stated that they had sent an email requesting more proof on the 5th JULY . and as i had ignored it they have cancelled it.
I have checked in both my inbox and junk email and there is definitely no email from them on the 5th JULY at all.
I have now emailed that i would like the cancellation fee refunded to me as they havent sent me an email to ask for more proof of no claims so I could not give them more, where do I stand with this.
It is only £53 cancellation fee but to me its more of a case of if they have not sent this email then they have failed to inform me of this requirement any help/advice on this would be great thanks

Do name and shame. What a cr*p company. Yes do complain and threaten to involve the FOS, plus inform the FSA about they way this company operates. I would not be happy paying the cancellation fee, given your explanation. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0
