Piggy bank savings

Myself and my partner have been saving coppers and 5ps in a piggy bank for years. We counted it up and put it into money bags but have found out our bank will only take 10 bags a day. Does anyone know an easier way of paying it in or what we could do with all the change? I'd prefer not to use one of the machines in a supermarket as they tend to take a percentage. We would be happy to open a new bank account just to pay the money in if a bank will take the whole lot in one go.

  • I believe Barclays have those machines in branch and it goes direct into account.

Not sure if that's just in Liverpool or other branches as well.

Banks can be strict on the amount of money bags they take in per customer per day, but at times I've encountered kind staff behind the desks in branches and they've allowed me to cash in more than the limit on a day. You might want to phone various branches around your area and ask if they would accept the amount of money bags you have in one go, they might just want a heads up before you turn up. Maybe even offer to open a new account with a bank you aren't currently with if they do take all bags.

The change counting machines, and the ones that change your change into notes etc can take a percentage cut, but I've seen one or two now and then where it only takes x amount, not a percentage. If you can find one of those, and if the banks still refuse the amount of bags, then that's your best bet!

Who knows, you might get lucky!

    Good luck!

    - Connor.

Which bank are you with? Larger branches of RBS, Natwest, HSBC and Barclays have Coinstar-like machines which will deposit your coins straight into your account with no fee.

HSBC don't have a limit on how many bags you bring in to change as long as you have an account with them.
