You can make an application for all benefits, but due to your contributions will not get them all. You don't mention if you have a partner, savings etc, all will come in play when you claim.

One of the benefits of self employment work is charging higher than otherwise, do you have any savings from 8 years of work?

    Income protection insurance?

Depending on your NI contributions you may be able to claim contribution based ESA. This is not means tested.

Any other benefits - CTB, HB - are means tested so it depends on your household income and savings.

    Let us know:
    1. What national insurance contributions you have been paying whilst self employed.

    2. Your age

    3. Whether you have a partner who works (how many hours/salary?)

    4. Any dependant children.

Difficult to help further without knowing your NI contributions so......

Put in a claim for contribution based Employment Support Allowance. You will be told if you are eligible.

If you aren't then you can apply for income based ESA. How much you get will depend on your income and capital. Owning a house which you rent out (is that right?) complicates things.

You can apply for Council Tax Benefit, but then owning a house which you receive rent on will be taken into account.

Are you going to be able to go back to work in 2 months time?

Will the doctor provide you with fit notes? (the old sick notes) - you will need them to be able to claim ESA.
