More good tips, thanks folks. I think what we will do is after the 1st day or so once the dogs are settled, go out for 20 mins or so, and leave one of our phones on a call to one we take with us and see if they do get distressed. If so then it will be dinners in everynight hehe

Up the north of Scotland i am not overly hopeful for the sun to be out much really, but would be amazing if it was! Fingers crossed.

Gonna also take lots of throws and dog towels etc to make sure any mess is minimised and will hoover spot clean the carpet daily.

We've booked a few nights in a cottage in Scotland for the end of the month - looking forward to taking the dog.

Unfortunately I haven't come across anywhere that will let you leave your dog unsupervised.

    Hello all,
As promised i am back for an update :-)
The cottage was perfect for us! The dogs had a ball and were very much at home and settled. Our cottage was facing the Moray Firth in a little conservation area, and we seen dolphins numerous times from our window as well as a seal colony 20 minutes walk up the coast.

The dogs enjoyed long walks and pottering about down at the rocky beach and the locals were amazingly friendly. I will go back for sure.

I am gutted to be back home and want to go back to Buckie!

If anyone is stuck holidaying in the Bath area, but needs a bit of free dog sitting for a few hours, either to eat out or visit attractions, give me a shout.

Our old dog was PTS a few weeks ago, and I'm missing doggy company, or even the get up and go for walkies.

    Glad you found somewhere!

We have always found this wording ad just ignored it. We have an elderly Peke and he just sleeps if we are out. We never go for more than 2-3 hours in any one day and he goes pretty much everywhere else. He travels in style is his dog buggy and is usually a hit anywhere we go!

I understand people covering themselves for their property and also from the Animal Welfare Act point of view. If you leave them too long they can ask you to leave without getting RSPCA etc involved, especially ifit is neighbours who report them.

We go to Whitstable alot and it is really dog friendly.

Sally, so sorry about your poor old dog. It does get better, trust me - but for me the only way forward was to get another dog.

How kind of you to offer dog sitting. The world needs more people like you.

I just understand the problem of taking a dog to places with you. Amazing that 80% of the UK like dogs, but only 5% of places will let them in. (OK I made those figures up, but that is the way it feels). So anyone in my area that needs an evening or weekend dog free break, I'm more than happy to oblige.

I've even taken in a stray cat for 2 weeks (how coincidental) and I don't like cats, but if people are having problems with kennelling fees for their holiday, I'd rather they admitted it and got someone like me to pet sit for free, than dump the animal. I've also offered my services to the local private hospital, a lot of old dears won't have their hips/knees/whatevers done if they don't know how the budgie/cat/pooch will be catered for.

Zaksmum, I've coped better with the recent old boys demise better than other dogs I've had, I'm still gutted that he was still healthy at 16, but his hips were knackered, and he had an element of dementia....but I had a good 9 months of gradual deterioration to prepare myself (yes it still hurts), the ones that have really hurt were a sudden liver tumour growth in a 12 year old female, (the old boys sister - BOGOF from the dogs home), Jumbo PTS after a stroke aged 17 - thought he'd go on for ever, so unwanted he was free at the age of 12 from the dogs home, could fart for England, and had no saving graces - my best dog ever.

As for getting another dog..........not yet....I do look at the Bath Dogs Home website, there are a couple there that I'd love to rehome, especially the strays with no history so they won't let them go to homes with kiddies.

I'll know when the time is right, currently I'm enjoying not having to rush home from work to see to the dog, but I know that soon the seesaw will tip the other way.

It's not a problem for us, we usually go on cottage holidays as we see it as our dog's holiday too, we wouldn't dream of going somewhere where we couldn't take him. Except restaurants in the evening (daytimes we tend to find someone where we can sit outside with him) but then he is very happy to wait in the car. He doesn't mind waiting in the car as he knows that we are coming back, so he just goes to sleep.

Although that said we are fed up with booking up in advance and then getting bad weather, so I'm trying to convince my wife that we (I) should buy a caravan so getting away at short notice when the weather is good is easily done.

I lived in France for a few years and got used to taking my dog into shops, restaurants, hotels etc. No having to sit outside a restaurant in the rain there. Even though my dog was big and took up some room, restaurants would never mind and if I sat outside with him they would ask why! Came back to England and struggle with hotels taking dogs, often pubs won't even let you sit in the garden with one!! Makes me laugh when people say this is a country of dog lovers!

I lost my dog two weeks ago so know exactly what you are saying about missing your dog. I go out to take my mind off him because obviously my house and garden are full of memories of him but then when I come through my front door I remember how he would run to see me wagging his tail and I cry again.

I will be getting another dog but not yet
