Break pads replaced - breaks still not good

Hi
I was wondering if anyone could help.
Basically i recently had my break pads replaced but the breaks are still crap and i can still hear grinding when i break, I am taking the car back to the garage on tuesday so they can do a break check.
I was wondering though if there could be any other reason why the brakes are basically no different and why they still grindng, i have no idea about cars and dont want to be fobbed off.
I know you cant tell unless looking at the car and i'm not looking for a definate answer just if there possibly could be another reason this is happening.

thnx x

well new pads can take up to 200 miles to bed in , up till then they can feel a little bit wooden

if theres a scraping noise it could be another issue...were the pads /shoes replaced at front and rear?

could be a leaky pipe or air in the system causing them to be poor...and the scraping could be a bent splash shield?

post up what car and where the noise is coming from etc

I have driven over 200 miles since they have been changed.
It's a 1997 peugeot 106, the noise is grinding and only happens when i break, i cant pinpont where it's coming from.
I had a fista a few years ago with the same noise that got louder and louder, my dad changed the break pads and it stopped.
I dont think it's the splash shield coz a few months ago it half came off and scrapped when i was driving but it was constant.
sorry if i havent explained thigns very well :o

I've had 3 Peugeot 106's, and they've all had problems with the rear brake shoes at one time or another.

To check if it is the rear brakes that are the source of the noise, you could try operating the handbrake only (which operates on the rear brake drums), on a clear stretch of road, at around 30 mph say. If the grinding noise is present when the handbrake is operated, it is the rear brakes. If no noise is present with the handbrake, but is present with the footbrake, it is most likely the front pads/discs.

The rear brakes are often neglected at a service, as a dust cap, nut and drum must be removed in order to inspect the shoes. Removing the drum can be very difficult!

Taking it to a garage/mechanic is the right thing to do.

Once you've mastered the art of handbrake turns come back and let us know and we'll learn you how to do donuts in Burger King car park ;) .

I wouldn't recommend driving at 30mph and pulling the handbrake up  , if you have any doubts try another garage or look around for somewhere doing a free brake check.

I think it is the shoes. I had the same problem on my car.

I agree, same problem with our Ka, it cost £70 to put new shoes on the rear brakes. Try finding a local garage who will check it for free.
