Pros and Cons of the different surveys?

It seems there is little point getting a homebuyers survey.
What are the pros of paying the extra money for a homebuyers survey? Do they actually ever give any real information?
What about a full survey? Would they be full of the @$$ covering stuff that homebuyers survey contain?

in my view there is no point whatsoever of getting anything!
They are getting money for old rope.
If you are buying a victorian place and older then maybe anything else upto £300k id say dont even bother!
The "experts" timber, roofers, electricians etc are probably full of crap aswell!
GOOD LUCK!0 -
I am disillusioned by the whole survey thing too! I think you could pay for umpteen surveys and no 2 would be the same - which as these people are qualified surveyors i would expect them to find the same problems/issues.
When we moved into this house we had the homebuyers done, thinking it was money well spent - wrong, the conservatory started to leak bucket loads the next time we had a major downpour. Surveys comment - surveys do not cover conservatories as they only have a lifespan of 25 years and therefore are not classed as the building rather as temporary additions.
Cop out in my opinion and no mention of this fact on our homebuyers report. £5,000 later to replace conservatory lesson well and truely learnt!!0 -
Our neighbours just moved house and the home buyer survey did not pick up a number of things they found to be wrong after they moved in.. They contacted the surveyor and in the end got enough to fix everything and then some on top for the bother.. They saved thousands. Surveyors are insured and covered for stuff like this. If they dont do a proper job sue them....0

I am the building trade and know the basics of what to look for regarding defects.
Still, like a prat, I've just paid for a homebuyers report which didn't tell me anything I didn't already know!
The basics to look out for for 'major faults' are cracks in brickwork/plaster etc. Its all visual stuff.0
