I took my car to my local garage today because the front tyres are pretty worn and they quoted me a good price two new front tyres and told me that Federal is a very good budget tyre.

Has anyone heard of them or bought them?

I only travel around locally and do about 5000 miles per annum.

Google search does not fill me with confidence:eek:

We've two federals on one on ours, and two heros (chinese, but owned by Federal.) on two others. All seem fine. I'd have them again. They have a heavy tie in with the Japanese Sumitomo Company.
  • Depends which model, Federal make dozens.

Having bought good well researched mid range tyres for years i bought a set of Feds this time, Formoza FD2.
Didn't expect much of them especially seeing they were half the price of my usual good quality choice and a third of the price of premium (lots of TV ads) makes.
I'm pleasantly surprised and will buy again, quiet comfortable and grip well enough in all non icy weathers, i run winter tyres so they won't be tested in the snow, and i would expect them to be not much good...just like all premium make summer tyres are in winter.

I am pretty sure it is SS657 - for a basic Ford KA, 165/65 R13 T - so fingers crossed they will be OK. Thanks for you kind words!

Have a poke nose on Tyretest.com and Tyrereviews.co.uk, you should find user reviews for those on both sites, read into them as best you can..

I don't really understand what they mean by summer and winter tyres:eek: I have always just had tyres that stay on all year round until they are worn out.

I am assuming, based on the price quoted, that it is definitely this tyre that they will be fitting, as it looks like the cheapest one they do:o

'Normal' tyres are essentially summer tyres, designed to work in warmer summer weather.

Winter tyres are designed to be better in snow and ice and more grippy in colder temperatures. Can use them all year round but wear quickly in hotter temperatures and not as grippy.

All season tyres are a mix of the two. At best excellent compromise between both types, at worst jack of all trades master of none.
