Randall & Vickers stamp duty claim

It seems randall and Vickers have mail shot the whole of West Yorkshire today. Claiming they can help reclaim stamp duty.

"DONT DO IT ITS SIMPLE AND FREE TO DO YOURSELF"

I really dislike these sort of companies! So I thought I would just warn other! Please bump if you agree :D

Thanks cc121. Can you tell me how to do it. I received a letter today but bought my property in September 2010. The HMRC website has no help for refunding Stamp Duty already paid.
  • Hi Guys, Its a similar situation for us too. Bought a house back in November 2011 and received a letter today from Randall & Vickers stating that stamp duty can be claimed back in return of 30% fee. :(

Surely, my solicitor should have known if I was able to claim a relief although I've just checked HMRC website and our post code does comes under the area which is eligible for relief.

On the of chance to confirm , should I get in touch with my solicitor or HMRC ? Paid around £1600 at the time so worth a try, right ? Or is it to good to be true ?

    Thanks

Also received this letter this week. Was going to bin it but thought I'd check on here first. Anyone following up?
  • I had one of these letters too, I'm in SE London.

I found information about Disadvantaged Areas and reclaiming stamp duty quite easily on the HMRC website.

It looks quite straight-forward to reclaim stamp duty, but it has to be done within 4 years apparently (rules me out as I bought my place in 2006).

I apparently can't post links, but search 'stamp duty refund' and you should find it.

I rang the tax office (08456030135) with my post code, after receiving a R&V letter, who told me i was elegible, told me to write to the tax office in Birmingham and Bob's your uncle. Five minute phone call save me 500 sovs, result!!
  • I live in Ipswich and received one of these letters yesterday. Like Turfy i called the tax office and for the sake of a phone call, and ten minutes composing a letter, im hoping for a refund in the region of £1300!
  • Even though certain post codes are eligible for dis-advantage area relief, still buyers will have to pay 1% stamp duty for properties bought after January 1st 2010 and for those which are valued between £150K to £250K.

Simply asking HMRC if a post code is eligible for a relief, answer will be yes , but dont forget the completion date of purchase and the value of the property. Google the HMRC site for disadvantage area relief.....
  • I had one of these letters recently too and although I bought my house 6 years ago, I went straight back to my solicitor as in my mind, if they paid the stamp duty on my behalf when it wasn't due, they are responsible for reclaiming it for me. I am therefore hoping to get a refund from them directly rather than from HMRC.

Hi I received the same letter and checked back to find i had paid stamp duty even though im in a disadvantaged area. i contacted the solicitor who dealt with the purchase of property and they have told me it was paid in error and they will claim it back for me. i cheekily asked if i would get the interest for the past 5 years when the property was purchased and they said they would pay this! result!
in fairness to the company who originally wrote to me, i wouldnt have known about this if they hadnt got in touch but im pleased i sorted it myself and saved hundreds of pounds.:)
