Advice on Vonage needed please.

Options
Hi,

my in-laws want to get Vonage because they do make alot of calls to France, and @£7.99 a month this seems ideal for them.

Can any voip phone be used with Vonage?

Are dual phones better?

Cheapest place to buy them?

How easy is it to set up? they have a cable modem.will they need to buy a router?

Do any of you have Vonage?

What do you think of it?

Many Thanks in advance

Lee..........

They provide you with an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) this you connect your regular phones to.

Vonage make out they offer a good service as you get Caller Display, Call Waiting, 3-Way Calling, ACR, etc, this is all part of the ATA, so you will get all these even with VoIP services that don't even charge a monthly fee.

You could have a look at :http://www.voipdiscount.com/en/index.html

You get 300 mins per week free calling to many countries, for a €10 (Ten Euro) top up, the free calling lasts for 120 days, after that you can either top up or simply use up the €10 on calls.

You can either use the software, or buy an ATA and set it up with VoIPDiscount.

VoIPDiscount don't offer an incoming number, but if one is needed PM me and I can tell you how to get an 01 / 02 one for free to point at the service.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

       Hi,

I've been with Vonage 3 months now, and the call quality is intermittently horrendous. I make frequent call to Ireland, and have echo nearly every time. I've done all their check list suggests and still get the echo. They recommend moving the router and adaptor 4 feet apart (but give you a 1 foot cable).
I had enough today and phoned up the tech help desk. There I was treated to a patronising American gent who called me 'young man' (I'm 40 !) and told me to 'slow down'.

So you could choose Vonage or you could go with a company that offer good quality and a good customer service.

  • I feel I should share my experience of this VoIP service.

I took up the aparently very good deal that offers free calls to landlines in the UK and a bunch of European countries, USA and Canada; also to mobiles in the USA (oddly).

The basic charge is £7.99 (inc VAT) and the rates to mobiles and 0870s don't seem all that bad.

Seems pretty good to me... except that it doesn't work. I often cannot make calls at all - either they do not connect or the person I called cannot hear me or I cannot hear them. It's crap.

Vonage suggested I do some diagnostics and then advised that my internet connection suffered from "latency". My ADSL connection speed is fine but I improved the contention by switching up a product but the Vonage problem is still there. I raised this "latency" question with my ISP and they got me to run similar diagnostics (pings and so forth) and the result was that the connection is fine. I think that Vonage were bulls1tting me.

I am now anxious about how to disconnect this service as it's clearly not giving me anything like value for money.
