    I certainly hope not.

Serious question, how do you imagine your kitten will know where to come home to if, once you have it, you just leave it outside?

I have managed this before - with my mums kittens, and every one of them came home.

We kept them in the box or cage we brought them home in for a few hours, fed them, played with them, talked to them etc.

Walked around with them in our arms or in the cage and sort of showed them round.

The first time we let them out, they didn't tend to stray further than a few metres from their cage/box, and returned to eat the food we had left for them.

If there is always food out, they will come back basically. Cats are very clever.
