2 class teachers in year 2

My son is going into year 2 in September and will have 2 teachers on a job share. I am a little worried as friends whose kids have been in this situation didnt seem to do well in comparision to those kids wih just the one teacher. Another mum also said to me she is surprised as they willl have thier SATS and she didnt think they normally spilt teachers in year 2 for that reason.

Whats your experience and how do I know if my child is behind becauae of having 2 teachers or just because he is slower to develop ?

I can't see any problem with it at all, as long as both teachers are good teachers.

IMO having two teachers can be a benefit rather than a hindrance. They will have different teaching methods and different personalities resulting in the children being far more stimulated than having one teacher all the time. It also means that the children get fresher teachers, they won't get the end of the week tiredness from a teacher who has only been there since Thursday.

The teachers will be inclose communication with each other and should plan the lessons between them using their own strengths as weaknesses to decide who is going to be the best at teaching what.

I can't see how a child would be behind by having two teachers and I can't see what effect it would have on thier SAT's. As long as the curriculum is being covered by interested teachers they will learn the same as if they were in a class with one teacher.

  • DD is just coming to the end of year 2, she had 2 part time teachers and a teacing assistant. She's done really well this year, is doing particularly ood with maths and english so i'd try not to worry too much. Yes, its probable that the teachers will have their own style of teaching and maybe have different expectations from the kids but they should all do fine.

We've just been told that next year we have split teaching again, but they're combining class 3 & 4 to make a huge class so will have a huge range of abilities. I'm wonderin how that will work.

  • ....and regarding SATS, our kids were none the wiser that they were havin these as it may put pressure on them. All we knew was on the days they came home havin had an extra play, doing some 'very hard work' or relaxation time listening to whale sounds or something! lol meant they'd has a test.

It's common in DD's school. The only problem I have had is that DD has one lovely teacher and one not so nice, which means she really doesn't look forwards to the days that she has the not so nice lady. I don't know whether if she had that teacher the entire time she would be more resigned to it - if that makes sense.

My daughter is just finishing year 2 and has had two teachers doing a job share. She also had 2 teachers job sharing in reception but in year one had just one teacher. My experience is as follows:-

Two reception teachers were both marvellous but had many years of experience and indeed both retired at the end of that school year. My daughter really benefitted from their different approaches and loved her time in Reception. In year 1 she has a young and very enthusiastic teacher who again was marvellous and suited her very well. This year as not been so good. She was due to have teachers A and B. Teacher A has been at the school many years and is very good. Teacher B had a baby last summer so has not returned to the school this year. On Thurs/Fri she had teacher C (a supply teacher) for one term and then teacher D (another supply teacher who always looks miserable) for the remaining two terms. Her SATS results are due out today!

Basically as I also have an older child who has only had one year of job share teachers I would say it is all down to who the teachers are as to whether it works or not. My son and daughter both have better expereinces some years but I think its all down to the child as to whether a more firm teacher or a more outwardly friendly teacher suits them better. Often job share teachers spend a lot of time communicating and a child can benefit from their different styles so don't necessarily be put off.

My DD has got 2 teachers, one half of the week each.
She gets on fine, I've not experienced any problems with it.

It just depends if they are good teachers I would think.

My DD had job share teachers in year one. They were both great teachers, who obviously worked well together, and I didn't feel my daughter suffered for it at all. When I first heard that she was going to have job share teachers I was quite anxious about how it would work out, but in reality it presented no problems at all.

SATS results for year 2 don't matter anyway (neither do SATS results for year 6 really).

Its like everything new or different as your child's school life progresses - see what happens and then if, having given it some time to bed in, you have valid concerns, then go speak to the school.
