Quick update, we looked at some venues this weekend, and have fallen in love with one, Shieldhill Castle Hotel near Biggar
I emailed them today and said I was struggling to get them in budget, and they have reduced the price significantly for us. It's run by a family, who have put a lot of effort in to redecorating.
The deal we have now got on the table is £3,912 for :-
70 guests
hire of the chapel and marquee,
3 course meal
canapes
evening hot rolls
reception drink
2 glasses of wine with dinner
1 toast drink
Staff
Chair covers & sashes
Table linen etc
Honeymoon suite
Free taster of meal
They have reduced all the rooms from being upwards of £96 each to being a fixed rate of £76.
I think it is a really good deal, and with a lot of other things falling in to place, it works with our budget.
The strange thing is that my parents (who have not seen it) are being really negative about it. No idea why, and it's getting to me a bit. They will go and see it, but every time I say something positive, they come back with a negative, and not a reasoned negative (eg, when the marquee hire was reduced, they said it must be because there is something wrong with either it or the place). They have been suggesting other places to us, but they are all either out of budget or just not our kind of place. Will have to have a chat with my mum on Saturday when she is up for dress shopping, but I am becoming increasingly glad we are paying for most of this ourselves, so we can stay in control.
Also, I have seen a dress I really like, it's much fussier than I thought I would like, but I felt like a princess in it. Will continue the search at the weekend, but at the moment, it is the only one to really get to me.Saving for wedding 25 August 2013£1,090/£6,000Wedding Diet7lbs lost , 33lbs to go0 -
 your venue deal is amazing! Well done! I'm sure once your parents have seen it they'll be happy too, maybe they think it's too good to be true!0

It sounds lovely and a great deal! Families seem to start behaving oddly when weddings come up, I've no idea why. I'm sure they'll come around to your way of thinking eventually!0

Just having a panic that the price might be excluding VAT, sent them an email so fingers crossed it's ok.Saving for wedding 25 August 2013£1,090/£6,000Wedding Diet7lbs lost , 33lbs to go0

I wouldn't bother with disposable cameras - get some blanks CDs (15-20 or so in your case), make/buy envelopes to fold inside with your names (ie Mr & Mrs ....etc) & address & stamp on them, put in a nice case/envelope & give one to each family/couple so they can post you a CD of their digital images. Cost = about £2.50 per CD.0

Hehe i had the i do diamonties...dont think anyone saw them on the day until i took my shoes off but have made a nice photo for the album. They are a bit of fun, nobody sees them unless you want them too!0

Update from the venue, VAT is included. She is sending me a full quotation so I can show my parents
I've gone off the disposable camera thing, much prefer the CD idea, forgot how expensive developing was!Saving for wedding 25 August 2013£1,090/£6,000Wedding Diet7lbs lost , 33lbs to go0 -
Thats a great idea, and living up in the Biggar area myself it is a great hotel with a brilliant reception. I think the fact they have reduced the price for you to fit your budget is a brilliant sign they are flexible and will do what they can to help you. Loads of other venues are three times the price and are much more unhelpful.
I know what you mean about struggling with controlling everyones emotins and keeping all parents etc. happy but I would definitely go for it if your up for it!Saving for our next step up the property ladder0
