Halifax no longer allows third party payments over the counter??

in Credit cards
I have a credit card account with Halifax which I have had for years. Yesterday my father went up to my local branch on my behalf to pay my monthly credit card bill over the counter with cash. He was told it is a new Halifax policy that only the card holder can pay this and he was turned away. Likewise if I have a cheque to pay into my current account, I have to go up in person. No one else can even pay it in for me. This to me seems ludicrous and when I rang another branch of Halifax they knew nothing about it. I went back to the branch in the afternoon and spoke to four staff who all confirmed this was a new policy. So basically if I have a cheque to pay in, no one else can pay it in to my account but me. And if I want to go and give them £400 in cash (which it was) to pay my bill...they will only accept the cash off me and no one else who goes to pay it on my behalf. The only way round this is to put it in a drop off box on the wall - but would you put £400 cash in a drop off box with no immediate receipt?! I have asked at another bank if this has ever been heard of and they said no definetely not. I am wondering if anyone has any similar experiences?

If they don't want your money, put it somewhere else. In the Halifax branches I use, there are automated deposit machines, so if you give someone your card they can deposit money for you. No PIN required so no need to reveal it.0

Sounds like an over-zealous response to a data protection complaint.
I assume he provided full account details to make the deposit and didn't need the branch to fill in the gaps.0 -
I think the Halifax cashier made a mistake or have misunderstood Halifax's procedures.
Paying cash to a Halifax should not present any problems (as long as it is not a huge amount) but paying by cheque or card might.
This is what a 3rd party payment is and applies to all banks.0 -
My local Halifax will not let me pay in notes at the counter anymore, only bags of coins. For notes you have to deposit it in the machine which I am not so keen on. There are no paying in slips available anymore and I was told this was the new policy as the Halifax is now part of B of S.0

Someone, somewhere, has got the wrong end of the stick. A bank will not usually let you pay into a third party account if you do not have the sort code and account number. It is considered a breach of data protection and security. When a cashier searches for account details, deposits money and produces a receipt, they are effectively handing over the sort code and account number to an unauthorized party. If you've already got a pre-printed bgc slip or the account details, then data protection is not compromised. If they accept payment at the drop box then what's to stop any third party from using the facility? I think the Halifax in question has probably had an issue with security for third party deposits and are probably responding with an over the top clamp down on third party credits0
