changing my name after divorce

really confused with what to do, got my decree absolute today and jus assumed i could change my name straight back but woman at court said i need to go to a solicitor to do it by deed poll, looked at a few sites online that do them but how do i know which are the real sites, any recommendations which to use please :)

  • you absolutely do not have to do it by deed poll!

It varies according to who you change it with, some places ask for a copy of your decree absolute and marriage certificate, some it's verbal and they're fine with that. There is not necessarily any rhyme or reason to who wants what - my bank were fine with me telling them on the phone, as were the council tax people. Credit cards they seem to want everything documented.

One of my friends said she had the worst trouble changing her parking permit over which we both found hilarious. I would have thought my bank account/council tax details were most important from a fraud prevention angle, but there we are :D

I made lots of colour photo copies of my birth certificate, marriage cert and decree absolute, marked them "COPY" and sent these off with a covering letter to places as and when required.

Passport and driving licence will cost to change but other than that, apart from the hassle factor, should be straightforward.

If you don't have your birth certificate or marriage certificate, you can order official copies online. Stupidly, you don't need any ID to do that :rotfl:

    Very helpful post above.

You do not ever need to pay for a 'deed poll' to change your Mae upon marriage or divorce. A marriage cert or decree absolute is all you should ever need within England & Wales.

These so called official websites rarely lodge change of names with the courts. The only 'official' record is amongst their own computer files. A very clever & inventive moneymaking business. They sell a product that is not actually needed.
