Can someone point me in the right direction?

Hi,

Ok I have a d link 2640B router and recently swapped from plusnet to talktalk broadband(we are not LLU).

Since moving i have had to reset the router every few days, what happens is that the internet stops working, I can't access the router via its IP address but when looking at the lights on the router it shows it is working fine.

When I reset the modem, uplug power and switch back on everything is fine untill the next time, there is no pattern to these locks.

So my question is this a router problem or a broadband one?

What can i do to try and find what is the problem so i can then fix it

Thanks

John

Both and when the router locks it is only the internet that stops on all machines wireless and wired including xbox 360, I must admit I have not tried accessing my wireless printer or files so I suppose if I can then it is broadband related rather than router.

Its just strange how the lights on the router dont show an issue.

Had a similar problem recently with AOL (part of talktalk) - transpired that the work at the exchange (by Openreach) had not been done properly. Unfortunately the guys in India were hopeless.

In this case, using an ethernet wired connection, we put another router/microfilter/cable into the NTE5 master test socket, still talktalk refused to do anything. It took two letters to the Talktalk complaints centre before it was finally fixed at the exchange.

Unfortunately you do need to check your own end out. Here are the contact details for TALKTALK UK

Have you tried the talktalk forum ( I know it is a 3 day at the worst turnaround, specially as it is coming up to the weekend) but Of course there is the option of logging your problem there and then contact them via twitter ... I will look up the hash-tag in a while .....

Here it is https://twitter.com/TalkTalkCare or @TalkTalkCare

If you can't access the router's control panel then it must be a router problem. I've never encountered a D-Link device that worked properly.

    Agreed.

No exchange problem or likewise would cause an issue to lock out the local router interface. Replace the router or firmware update it.

Or swap it for a cheap Billion bipac model or Asus if you're feeling a bit rich.

I've been using 2640B's for a good few years, they're a great bit of kit and very reliable. This sounds more like an authentication problem than a user equipment issue, apart from not being able to access the router GUI.

Are you trying to access the router via ethernet? If not, this is the first thing to do.

Have you re-checked all the ISP settings in the router?

Have you done a hard reset of the router (via the recessed button on the rear panel) and set it up again?

The other thing to possibly do is re-flash the router firmware - are you using v3.06 or 4.01 ??

When the router is working, are you able to access the router's control panel?

When it is locked up, are you able to ping other devices on your network?
How do I add a signature?

check you've re-configured router settings for TT and aren't still trying to use the Plusnet settings, especially the ISP login details, should be primaryemail@talktalk.net and password in the form A1B2C3D4E5
