Legal time to post a charge to a credit card

Does anyone know if a company has a legal requirement to charge your credit card for something purchased within a specific timeframe?

If you purchase something from a company and they "forget" to charge you, are they legally allowed to charge your card for that purchase, a year after you bought it?
