Home Insurance with criminal conviction

Hi Everyone,

I currently still live at home with my mum. A while back she got a criminal conviction for hitting someone - this has left me in a rather awkard situation. Our previous home insurance was cancelled due to this.

95% of the home's valuable contents are mine - my mum doesn't have much of value, but me being a tech geek has everything and then some! :-)

Is it possible to get something along the lines of "individual home cover"? Something to cover my possessions in the household?

If not, do you guys have any suggestions as to what I can do, or is moving out pretty much the only way I'm insuring my content?

Thank you for your advice :-)

Specialist brokers such as Bureau Insurance services may be able to help.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

You have 2 issues here. The conviction and also the cancellation of the previous policy by previous insurer. Both need to be declared to future insurers.

Maybe try here - they seem to have options for your circumstances.

Once the conviction is spent, you do not usually have to declare it.

However as regards to the cancellation, you might find that you will always have to declare this - as long as you are living with your mum anyway.

If you move out neither of these incidents need to be mentioned (assuming the original policy was in your mum's name).

I have several business customers with GBH, ABH, Assault etc, and it's not affected their insurance in the slightest.

The conviction sounds 10x worse than the actual incident, these are normally beer fuelled, and range from someone defending a disabled mate that was getting picked on, the gobby bully lost so reported it, resulting in an ABH: a bloke having a kerfuffle with his ex's new b/f on how he is treating the child - pushing him backwards off a low wall = GBH.

They are all laughable offences, and it's usually the ones that have the best interests at heart that get done, as the stirring wimpish bullies will call the law if they are on the losing side.

If you fill in a box on a comparison site, you will be declined, if you go to a call centre they will not think in real life terms - as they are not programmed to do so. Go to a local broker, explain the circumstances - I've seen old ladies fight over a find at a jumble sale - what the insurers need to recognise, and underwrite on, is - will this result in retribution?, is there other dodgy stuff going on?

    Be totally up front.
  • I was convicted of a crime of crime 40 years ago nothing since then have been insured without mentioning it for 30 years without a claim and yet when I have recently tried to get insurance and telling the insurance companies about the conviction they wont insure me saying I am a high risk even after 30 years without a claim

What type of Insurance was it?

Have you read this, which explains when and if you do not have to disclose a spent conviction. If the conviction is spent you do not need to disclose it to an Insurer no matter how they word the question.

Also have a read of this http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/ombudsman-news/25/25-disclosure-of-spent-motoring-convictions.htm
  • the conviction is classed as unspent as I was sentenced to 4 years

First clear the cookies on your computer.

Use a made up name and very similar address with all other details the same eg same type of house (Use a made up tele such as 01234 567890).

When you find the cheapest, clear the cookies again.

Then do another dummy quote with the Insurer, have a good read of their question about criminal convictions or any list they have of requirements for policyholders.

There are plenty of Insurers who only ask for convictions within the last five years. You should be able to find some by performing the above.

When you find an Insurer that just asks for five years, clear the cookies from your computer and then run a quote through in your own name with the proper details etc.

Don't any Insurers who have declined you already in person.

(The comparison sites have a wider question about convictions eg have you ever had a conviction as they want to be able to cover all bases with all the Insurers they use).

IT'S IMPORTANT YOU CLEAR YOUR COOKIES AS AND WHEN I INSTRUCTED, IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS IS LET US KNOW
  • cheers for that will give it a try
