Advice on Halifax Mobile Insurance

Hi Everyone,

I recently had quite a bad experience - basically my iPhone 4 was lost or stolen (I'm not entirely sure which, it was a short walk from town to my house and it went missing. Either pickpocketed or I dropped it), and I had no insurance.

I've just upgraded to the Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account, but noticed this:
Any loss or damage to your phone:
  • While it is in an unattended motor vehicle, unless completely hidden from view within a locked glove compartment, locked boot or other lockable internal compartment and the vehicle is fully locked and secure
  • Where it has been left unattended in a public place or place in which people, the public has regular access
  • Where it has been passed to someone else

Regarding the second bullet point - let's say I drop it and don't realise, for example, like in this case. Does this mean I won't be covered? Technically it's "left unattended", but that's the 'lost' part of it! :-)

Thanks for your advice!

Do they cover accidental loss, where you have no recollection of where you might have lost it ? This would not be unattended, as that would be where you place the phone deliberately and then leave it there.

I find it a bit difficult to believe that you can walk from your house to the local town and lose the phone without even noticing. If it dropped, unless you had headphones in-ear, you would hear it fall onto a pavement for example. Would you place the phone on a counter in a shop, while you were paying for your shopping ? Have you enquired with any shops you visited ? Have a sit down, close your eyes and try to remember the whole journey, starting from where do you normally put the phone, when you leave your house.

Have you phoned your phone number to see if you can hear it ringing. Has it fallen into the lining of a jacket or a bag.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

    Thanks for the response.

Regarding my phone being lost, basically went like this: Was meeting a friend, remember calling him, placed phone back in my pocket. Met him outside a shop, talked for about 5 mins then walked home. When I got home, phone was missing. Called it immediately, phone was off. Used FindMyiPhone and Prey (another tracker) and neither can find it - whoever got their hands on my phone knew what they were doing.

I was indeed wearing headphones at the time - not connected to the phone however, connected to another device. Definitely was not left in any shops as I never entered any - it's either fallen out of my pocket or been lifted from my pocket. Marked with police, but not hoping on getting it back.

    In regards to halifax:
    • One phone per account holder, maximum of two for joint accounts
    • Repair or replacement phone up to a maximum original cost or value of £2,000
    • Covers loss, theft, accidental damage, breakdown, water damage

So make the claim and see how it goes. Some companies will decline the claim in the first instance and then you will have to make a complaint. ( I have read that they (phone Insurers in general) receive so many claims for lost phones, that they try to make it more difficult).

When you phone they will ask may questiones. Does the pocket have a zip or button ? Do you normally place the phone in the same pocket ? These are asked, as there will be a general term in the policy about you taking reasonable precautions to prevent a loss. Be prepared.
