No Bill From Talk Talk

I hope that someone can help me with this because I'm not exactly sure where I stand.
I've been with Talk Talk for years and have always received a months bill which was paid by direct debit. In June this year I moved in to a new property and decided to go with Sky as they had a good package. I have now received a bill from Talk Talk for £283.00 with no details just a bill saying that as I have cancelled my account this is what I owe.
I rang Talk Talk and they have said that they had an error on their system in August 2011 and have not billed me for my usage or taken any money out of my account since then. I admitt that maybe I should have noticed that I had not received a bill or that the money wasn't being taken but I didn't I just presumed everything was ok.
Where do I stand with this. If they have made an error and I have done nothing wrong will I have to pay?
Thanks

Yes. You've had the service so will need to pay.
I really can't understand how you didn't notice you weren't getting any bills or having any money taken out of your account for that length of time. You need to check your statements regularly to pick up errors.

Yes - you have no grounds to complain. What they don't tell you about Direct Debits, is that your liability to pay remains whether or not they take the money that is owed.
So, someone who has given a firm a DD, can still find themselves chased by Debt Collectors because the firm did not take the money. Fair? Of course not, but it is currently the way it works, and there is no defence in saying you provided the means to pay.0
