Not eligible for the electoral roll

Hi,

I'm a Norwegian national going on the 4th year here in London.
As a Norwegian i am not eligible to be registered on the Electoral Roll. Sometimes this affects my credit applications etc.

Here is what i'm thinking of doing:
Writing to HMRC to get a confirmation of my adresses
Writing to Experian etc and ask them to add the HMRC note to my credit file.

Will that help my credit score etc?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

    No it will not.

Why not try for British citizenship?

Why not try for credit via Norwegian banks?

Experian say "you could add a note (called a notice of correction) to your report explaining that you cannot register on the electoral register because you are not eligible to vote in UK or EU elections. You can also say in this note that you have documents to prove where you live and how long you have lived there."

    So yes, that's basically it.

Or you could apply for British citizenship, or persuade Norway to join the EU. Either of those would work as well.

That needs 5 years (or 3 years if married to a British citizen)

    Simple:
    1. Norway joins EU
    2. You go on electoral roll (you can vote in european elections)
    3. EU takes Norway's oil money
    4. You can get credit
Seriously, I've known foreigners to get credit here but it is more difficult, as you say. Best to start via the bank with whom you have your bank account (if you haven't already).

    5. Norway joins the Euro
    6. Norway goes bust after bailing out Greece, Spain, Portugal...........

Can you not join to vote in local elections?

I thought that was open to everyone from an EEA country?
  • My husband is Swiss, not on the electoral role, CH is not a member of the EU or EEA and has had no trouble getting credit. Granted, his only CC is with his bank but it was obtained very easily.

The only "disadvantage" he has faced is banks not willing to accept his Swiss ID as a valid ID document, but so far a UK debit card has sufficed.
