New Heating Installation

just had the guy from SSe here for a breif chat about cost for a new boiler. I was looking at the WB 30CDi and He's advised a WB 30Si.

I was wanting to mount new rads ahead of time to save the plumber time removing and remounting radiators but apparantly they wont do that. He's given a quote for moving boilre/fitting new one and repiping where needed to make good, system clean, and inhibitor.

Heres a breakdwon of what's on the quote:

WB 30Si £964
Boiler Replacement >3m. change in system config and system cleanse and inhibit. £2350
Standard Flue £156
Drayton Wireless Therm (DIGISAT 3RF701) £157

FREe Fernox 22mm Filter
FREE CO Detector
Make Good flue £84
Additional Gas supply run 6m 22mm £144

Sub Total: £3855
Discounts: £436
Total: £3419

Additionally if I wanted them to replace and fit the Radiators thats an additional £3345 for a 6 rad pack fitted.

Really not got a clue about the quote.
The 6pack of rads seems Extrmely high priced.

I've put together a rough idea of what I wanted over at plumbcentre and thats come to £2738. Thats all new rads, boiler, filter, valves. Makes me think that their almost 7k charge is a tad on the high side.

Obviously i can't see the property to see what the work is involved but £3K+ to supply and change 6 radiators =='s get out of my property.

I assume the £436 is some sort of scrappage scheme nonsense?

I'd get some indie quotes and stop talking to the big 6 suppliers.

FOAF contacted about having the work done. (might even be able to wangle plumbcentre discount :D)
Local indie coming round Monday to have a look.
Need to ring the 2nd on sunday as he's away until then.

Like I say I've priced them all up and everything comes under 3k.
Quite happy to buy the bits n bobs outright and have them waiting.
Need to find someone to install them tho :p
    Concern is the warranty situation.

It's a 1940's house (AFAIK) and appears to have had the heating system upgraded by British gas at some point.

    Work involved:
    Disconnect old back boiler (Downstairs)
Install and pipe in new Boiler (Upstairs) Next to bathroom.
    Install Filter.
Repipe to the already hung new rads.

The quote states just mroe than 3m.
If I wanted them to install teh new radiators that would've added and additional 18M of 22mm piping (COST: £324 LMAO)

I'm quite happy to pull out the old Back boiler as well as any uneeded piping and go weigh them in at the scrappy.

when speaking to indies let them know you want to keep copper to weigh in - they usually take that 'perk' into account when putting together a quote for you.

As for SSE - why would you even contemplate using someone who won't do what you asked for in the first place - let alone the supposed price??!!

You may find that an indie will also spec up 28mm for the gas pipe too.

Anyway - let us know what the indies come back with.

  • Erm, I'm not entirely sure but we are having gas central heating installed next week - this is to put in a boiler (we don't have an existing one) and install 6 No. new radiators including all associated pipework. Our quote is just under £3k so maybe yours is a bit high?

No, I would say yours is very low:)

I don't know if I'm looking at this the wrong way but that's almost £2500 for what 3/4 days work?

Like i said in my previous post i can't physically see what needs to be done but the "second part" of the quote means they are taking the proverbial somewhere along the lines.

    I'd have expected this lot:-

    --
    WB 30Si
Boiler Replacement >3m. change in system config and system cleanse and inhibit.
    Standard Flue
    Drayton Wireless Therm (DIGISAT 3RF701)

To be around £2.5K (depending on where you are).

This is based on quotes I've seen for a WB24i and all the bits above (minus the CO detector & Drayton) for £1.7K to £1.8K.
That includes a 7 year parts and labour warranty too.

I'll be interested to see how the indie quotes come in compared to my guess at £2.5K

Edit: just to be clear i'm excluding the additional Rad work from what I've said above. No doubt i'll get shot down by a plumber for the above :-)

Is the additional 2 year warranty only if I used a WB approved installer?

Typically it has to be registered with WB by an approved installer to get the additional warranty.

You'll probably also find that everything after the 1st year requires the boiler to be serviced by a WB approved person for the warranty to carry through to the full 7 years.

It is always worthwhile asking how much that is going to cost as it will add to the total cost down the line.

MIL just had the following done by a local Indy with an impeccable reputation:

    Remove Warm Air Boiler
    Remove Water Tanks in Loft
    Remove Hot Water Cylinder
Install new WB30CDI in loft including new Gas run from Meter and necessary roof work for vertical flue
Install 7 new Rads including all pipework
    Install Wireless RF Room Stat

    £4200
