I was surprised to see that many whilst they didn't have electricity were able to watch television by adaping car batteries to provide the power.
There was even a guy who was running a businerss charging them up.
I wonder how long that will last as the "benefit" of consumer driven society drifts in.
Money and material possesions do not bring happiness merely choice and a little more comfort."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I only have the one name. But I think it was me who first mentioned monks.
Nope. I just did an 'advanced' search on your username and the word 'monk' and you had never (ever) used it before you had the username mixup.
The way devon keeps chiming in is now making me wonder about just who the puppet master is. I know that Devon runs the sad rewired 'thanks' puppet, so perhaps he also has a few more on the go. Here's me thinking I'm arguing with 3 people (well 2 now that you slipped up) when I could very well be arguing with 1 person.
Devon is certainly obsessed enough to run a series of sockies, he does live on here and has made over 30,000 posts. That shows real obsession.0 -

IIRC you called me an idiot amongst other things and do particularly like pensions.
You've worn me out with having to respond to all your usernames.
A good way to 'quote' my text and then not actually respond to anything in the post. A nice piece of distraction, worthy of Devon.....
Didn't work on me though. So.... why didn't you attack Conrad's downsizing plans?0 -

Apart from here, I guess?

Dearie me.
!!!!!! is wrong with you.0 -
Renoman - the search function is crap - you have to start typing the username and then select it from the dropdown rather than just paste it in.
At least you've managed to cheer up rewi...sorry I mean Graham.0 -

You may rest assure I only have one username.
Probably because his other points were more interesting?
With all this paranoia just be careful of hoodies.
I can't see anything on this thread where I have attacked your downsizing plan BTW."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

But I do think that pension pots of all kinds are a complete con, and a lot more people are going to discover this soon. All schemes to support the non-working are ultimately pay-as-you-go. It doesn't matter how many IOUs you're sitting on, you've got no control over whether they'll be honoured or what they'll be worth when you need them."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -
Not often that he and I agree about anything. I've said unkind words in the past, which I regret, though he does have a knack of winding me up.

Do you think that ISAs are a complete con?0 -

So are you saying that downsizing is a perfectly valid financial strategy?0 -

They haven't been around that long, but if anybody had been able to put money into a cash ISA 40 years ago, they might be looking at it a bit ruefully now.
I prefer inflation-linked savings. But they impose a massive burden on the future, which the future may be unwilling or unable to meet. I wouldn't bet on anybody except the Government to pay an inflation-linked redemption value more than 5 years ahead, and I'm not so sure about the Government.
As for stocks and shares, well, as Keynes once said, markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent. He lost money, and most amateurs lose money. There are ways of losing money that are more fun than donating it to the City.
So no, if I'm 20, I can't say I've got huge confidence in ISAs as a way to build a retirement pot. The timescale is way too long."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be.
