I have been reading Martin's weekly money tips and one of them is this DIVX DVD player, some of the post seems to suggest you can play AVI files on them, first of all is this correct ?
Secondly i have tried to convert AVI to DVD format before with no success, anyone no of any Programs that you can burn AVI straight to disk to hopefully play on the Above DVD player? any help would be great..
Thanks

yep it should play the majority of AVI files encoded with divx/xvid/mp4 etc
you can burn them direct to a dvdr using nero or something similar as a data disc in IFO not UDF format.
or you can use the likes of nerovision xpress to make a full dvd-video disc but it takes a lot longer.
theres also media hard drives about which plug into the USB port, you transfer your AVI files across like you would to any usb device, then it plugs into the AV channel of your tv and boots up like a DVD menu:: No Unauthorised Links in Signatures please - FM ::0 -
DVD-Flick does a good job of converting to DVD. The version of Windows Movie Maker that ships with Vista is pretty good too.
For lots of info on video conversion etc. have a look at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Video_Interleave:
Audio Video Interleave, known by its acronym AVI, is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a standard container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback.
DivX/XviD are AVI files indeed, but not all AVI files are DivX/XviD. Note that some DivX might not be "standard" (e.g. some files have the audio encoded with ogg instead of AC3/MP3), so don't expect 100% of AVI files to work, even if the video is DivX/XviD.
Like rockabilly, in order to convert DivX/XviD to DVD, I'd suggest Nerovision Express: it's simple to use and does a good job.0 -
Just remember that if you get a divx player you don't actually need to convert and burn to dvd format - you can just burn the files to a blank dvd (or better a rewritable dvd) and then play it in the player0

I use ConvertXtoDVD http://www.vso-software.fr/shop.php to convert all sorts of files with odd file endings into DVD. You just fire it up and drag in the files you want to convert..all mixed up if necessary and the software does the rest.
The downside is that it cost about £25 and takes about 2hrs to do a dvd.I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!
I'm not losing my hair... I'm getting more head!!0
