Making a complaint but need some help...

Afternoon All, I recently purchased a top from the River Island online sale. £8 + delivery, very happy. the top arrived and I had ordered a size 12, which is normally more than big enough. tried the top on and it nearly ripped it was that tight! So, went onto the River Island website to check what they say the measurements should be for a size 12. Their site says a size 12 top should measure 36 inches across the bust, my top measured 32 inches. A MASSIVE 4 inches difference! I personally think, in a world where eating disorders are rife, this is disgusting! Regardless of the price I pay, I expect good quality clothing from such a large retailer! So, hoping to make a complaint, any ideas of what to say? Is this covered under any laws etc? All help much appreciated! PS I still have the top it has not yet been returned.
Thanks

It just sounds like a sizing error if their own site states a different size than what it actually is. Send it back with a note stating it's been sized wrong and get a refund.

By the tone of your post though it seems that won't be enough..

Haha it's just I was so angry at how it made me feel when I tried the top on and it didn't fit. It's just I don't think the shops realise the affect something like this could have on someone. I think it's something that needs looking at.

    Possibly over reacting...?

There is no 'standard' sizing for clothing. One shops size 12 can be completely different to another shops size 12 or in fact two different items by different designers in the same store can be different. One of the reasons it's particularly important to try clothes on.

In this instance as the website stated how many inches each size equates to then it is clearly not as described, however had it not (and a lot of websites don't) then it would likely just be how the product is.

So there's no point getting emotional or upset simply because a certain size of a certain product doesn't fit you!! You choose the next size and move on

Yes, over-reacting. Just send it back for a refund or a larger size.

I got a new shirt yesterday in my normal size, couldn't even get it buttoned up. All my other shirts are ostensibly the same size as the new one, and they all fit. No big deal, the new one goes back to the shop for a larger size.

Erm, you could start off by saying that you bought this top, but there seems to be an error in that is has the wrong size label in it rather than steaming in accusing them of deliberately making their sizes to small.

As far as I am aware there is no law covering the underpaid children/women working in the sweatshops putting the wrong size label in a top.
