How can I find out when I moved into this house? Lie?

At work, they need to do a security check on me, and want to know exactly when I moved into this house.

However, I have no idea. It was when I was maybe 1 year old, and my dad isn't sure either. Where can we find this info? Can I just guess (within 12 months of the actual date)?

Just putting down your year of birth or the one after will be enough ..... if you've been there all your life it's not an issue.

The trouble comes with people like me who have moved from:
    House A
    House B
    House C
    House D
    House E
    House B
    House F
    House B
    House F
    House G
    House H

    .... since 2007

And some of those "houses" were winter lets, caravans and hotels.... without proof.

So it was at least 18 years ago you moved to where you are now correct, tell them what you can remember. I cant see them being that bothered about it as its so long ago. cant remember the exact date I moved to where i am now as i moved when i was little but I have a vague idea as ive been told I was a years old so i take that off my age and ive got a rough date.

    Depends was it bought

    with a mortgage.

    land registry

    or rented

    ask the landlord.

if more than a few years then the right year will probably be enough.

Any grandparents they tend to keep records.

    thanks for the replies everyone

I've been here about 20 years, and my dad said that he has changed the mortgage so even on there it doesn't have the original date we moved in

I had a word with someone in HR and she said they would need at least the month :(

If you're sure of the year, put down December as the month.

Most security checks generally want an address history of 6 years (because that is the normal statute of limitation) so if you've been there more than 6 years, put the year you think and a month of your choice and they'll never know. Once they go back beyond your 16th birthday there will be no trace of you anyway!

Won't the Land Registry give details of when the property last changed ownership?

  • I'm in a similar situation as in, I still live at home with my parents and have done since I was around 1. I've always just put the year and guessed the month, never had any problems with that.

Like others say, they are normally just interested in the last 5 years or so. FWIW I did a credit check form recently and it stated that best guess was fine! tbh if you can't work it out then they are never going to find out that it's wrong!
