Item not as described

Hi all,

have just recieved an item that i bought off of e-bay recently, a coat for my little one.
The seller has described it as excellent condition NO MARKS, STAINS, OR SIGNS OF WEAR*
The jacket is very dirty, despite the claim it will be freshly laundered, there are stains on the coat and the two mock leather buckels are scrached and showing white through it is sitting next to me now giving off that smell of old and dirty  hardly what you would say excellent condition, and i paid £12.50 for it plus P&P.
i have e-mailed the seller to let her know i am not happy - what are my options, as it is clearly not as described - if i ask for a refund and return the item does the seller have to re-imburse me all of the postage and the total selling cost - how long do i give them before i raise a dispute.

I sell on e-bay all the time and i would be embaressed to send this out as they have described it - its filthy and stained and i will not be putting in on my daughter.

i would appreciate any feedback

Wait for the response before jumping the gun.

Getting any seller to pay your returns post is nigh on impossible on Ebay, so your best option is to keep the seller onside.

The seller has to pay item cost plus outward postage but eBay have no way of forcing someone to refund return postage.

I don't believe someone who would send out dirty clothing will respond well to being told that it is not in the condition she listed it at, but TOWIU has the right idea - there is plenty of time to raise a dispute if they get tricky, and to be honest if I received something in that sort of condition I would expect to have to go to dispute and not to get my return postage back.

EDIT - just thought of something - eBay sometimes now give postage credits or prepaid labels, so you need not lose out.

Thanks for your feedback, i have sent the seller a message and will give them until sunday to respond, they may work full time and only check their mails on weekends. i like to give the benefit of doubt.

im not too concerned if i have to pay return postage - i just want my initial sold price and p&P reimbursed to me.

Really dissapointed - this is the first thing i have purchased that is really disgusting - maybe i have a different concept of excellent condition and no marks or stains or signs of wear than they do.

You're not the only one. It's the main reason I don't buy clothes from private sellers, and only very rarely from business sellers.

I haven't had anything too bad (only a shirt that smelled of smoke - not the fault of the mailing bag, it came in a padded paper envelope - but it only needed an airing before it was fit to wear), but I like to see clothing before I buy it to make sure it fits and it's of presentable quality.

Many people have a good time buying clothes on eBay, though, so it's not all bad.

I would expect something described as excellent condition to be in as new condition.
Nothing should be dirty, smelly or stained.

I have just had a respone from the seller, she sounded sincere in that she was harrased by the kids and probably did not look at the coat correctly....and dont worry about sending it back !

i have replied stating i could not keep it and that i will return it, she has issued a full refund, and that i need her to send me her address for me to return it to.
I have also stated i will not leave negative feedback, as mistakes do happen.

her feedback was 100% so im not going to lessen it for her.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions in regards to this.

You've been lucky :). I'm glad it worked out for you. If she is prepared to refund unilaterally, then you don't - and shouldn't - pay out to return it. Just bin it.

She is probably mortified. I agree - I wouldn't neg her either; I wouldn't leave any feedback at all (not a positive transaction but, as you say, not a negative one either), but if you really want to leave her something then may leave positive but no DSRs.

I think some people have strange ideas.....you know when well wishers give you second hand clothes for your kids and you open a bag full of stained, torn, fit the bin rubbish.....you have wonder what they must think of me....lol...!!
Never put off until tomorrow what you can avoid doing altogether.:D

It's not necessarily fussy but there is no ability to list as 'unused' or 'unread'.

I have a book I bought brand new from HMV but have never read (it still had the receipt in it when I was looking for stuff to list); I have listed it for sale on Amazon as 'Used - Like New', but that is not an option on eBay AFAIK. If it was, it might solve that problem particular problem.
