Hi All,
MODS, Not sure if this is posted in the correct place there please move if required.
I have been sent a letter from the council asking to confirm personal details regarding voting. In previous years I've just completed this and not thought much about it.
The question I have is if the council collect this information for voting purpose then can they use this information for any other purpo e.g to provide car permits without permission from me? I'm not sure the rules around data protection so if anyone could answer I would be grateful.
Thanks,
D

If you mean the electoral register form, which you need to fill in from time to time, then it can legally be used for other things.
What those things are depends on whether or not you tick the "opt out" box. If you don't tick the box, then anyone can get your details just by buying a copy of the register.
If you do opt out, then the register can still be used for a limited number of things, including credit checks. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0
