Hope someone can advise..

My 2002/Mk3 Mondeo has developed what sounds like a belt whine only for a couple of seconds on cold starts.

These are chain driven so no cambelt but any ideas where I should start investigating?

Thanks as usual

    Auxiliary belt?

That's the one which drives the alternator, water pump, power steering, air con etc., if fitted.

I have a 2003 Mondeo - they have two aux belts. One is a small one that just drives the power steering pump and the other is the much longer one on the other side of the engine. If you lift the bonnet when you start the car you should be able to hear which one is slipping. I recently changed both the belts on my car - they cost me a total of £20 approx. I did the small one myself & had a garage do the other one - labour was around £50. Best get it seen to asap, with winter coming!

or you can pour a bit of water on the belt it will stop screaming as soon as the water gets between the belt and pully.

    Ignore this.

Just get the belt tension adjusted which should be 10 mins work with a spanner at service time, or if they are getting on a bit it's inexpensive and sensible preventative maintenance to get them changed.
