Children's ID question

This may seem a stupid question, but I need to open accounts for my boys, they have passports, but they expired last month, can I still use these as their main form of ID? I am now separated from their Dad, and I don't really want him to know that I am putting money aside for them.
edited to add - he has their birth certificates, and asking for them would raise questions which I'd rather not answer

No, I'm afraid that expired passports are as much good as an ashtray on a motorbike.
You can order copies of birth certificates online though, from the GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp which would stop you having to ask the father. It does cost but might be the easiest way - certainly cheaper than a new passport!0
