LibreOffice for Ipad

Options
A collegue of mine has been given an Ipad, and wants to be able to wwork on and edit Excel and Word files.
MS office is too expensive, but Libre Office is free. we tried a download but safari will not allow it.
Is there a reason that I do not see?

I believe that question was answered in the topic I linked to

Your colleague needs to have a serious re-think of their expectations - the iPad (and android tablets, for that matter) are not simply conventional laptops with the keyboard cut off and a funky touch interface installed instead of a mouse. They work totally differently, and they can't use normal PC software at all.

I believe Apple's office apps (Pages, Keynote, etc), which are available for the iPad for a reasonable price, will open office files.

AstralPad now offers an iPad Office App built on LibreOffice, with a touch optimized interface. You can view and edit your office documents, spreadsheets and presentation files.

It's currently available in the US and Canadian App Stores (other countries coming soon).

I'm looking at wether I can use an iPad to write and submit essays for my OU course, what would I need to purchase if something suitable doesn't come as standard?

No joking, but a keyboard. It's not comfortable writing long amounts of text on an ipad. Also the keyboard on screen can take up half of it basically, so you lose a lot of that screen space when you are writing, ok surfing, or anything using a little, or no text, but annoying else wise.

Other than that look at what is needed for your course.
There are writing programs, even from basic note taking (that then sync with things like google docs), to graphical programs, but really you should try one with what you're likely to do, and find apps (and subsequent prices) that would allow you to do what you need to do. You might find it's just uncomfortable to use.

If you go down that route, search out the itunes voucher threads for any deals on the vouchers which reduce the cost of apps in a round about way. So a £25 voucher for £20 etc.

Probably you'd also need things like stands for good view/use, but then they prove awkward with using on screen keyboards. I'm not dissing them, got an ipad myself and love it, but it's not a laptop/netbook replacement by far.
