I have a toshiba portege R800-184 and I would like to make the jump - Just not sure if the machine could handle it. How would I find out?
I have contacted Toshiba and they have pretty much said no to assisting on the issue as it would be a non standard install..whatever that means
Many thanks for your help

Check whether the CPU is a 64bit one or not. If it is, you're good to go.0

Is there any particular reason why you want to move to W7 64bit. The only benefit I can think of so far is the ability to use more than 4GB of RAM. A lot of programs still run on 32bit.
The first thing you should check for is to see if the processor is ready for 64bit operating systems.0 -
I can find little about that specific model (are you sure it's not an R700?), but the answer for any recent PC/laptop is "undoubtedly".
However, you need to have 64-bit laptop-component-specific drivers, so check the Toshiba website to see if they provide them.
The fundamental question is, though, why do you think 64-bit operation is so wonderful? Why do want to change from the 32-bit (probably not 62-bit!) operation you have already?0 -
If you have any old windows programs that are 16bit, they will not run in 64bit, only 32bit is backward compatible.0
