My daughter did it last year and had to choose her disciplines to be 'tested' in, she chose:

    Skiing
    horse riding
    trampolining
    netball

i think at least one had to be a team sport but they could basically choose anything for their practical. as everyone else says though, there as a LOT of theory

At my child's school if you choose to take P.E. as an option you choose either GCSE'S P.E or BTEC P.E. the latter being more course work based and the first being more exam based.

My sister did GCSE PE (back in 2004 mind) and it was all based on sports she wanted to do, so she did netball, football (she's footy mad and was the only one in the school to do it for her GCSE that year) and horse riding. It was all individually assessed (apart from the netball, which made up her team element) and she had a checklist of 10 points for every sport she did, which was what grade she got - so 5 things on the checklist done was a grade C or something.

Kinda bit her in the back when she did horse riding though as it started at 1) tack horse up and 10) jump a 3ft cross country jump :o her max for jumping is 1ft 6, lol

Lots of people have offered helpful information, but to be honest this is not really a question people here will be able to give you more than a general answer for. Although the content of the theory part will be tighly matched to the exam board syllabus, the practical part is rather open for individual schools. It essentially acts a bit like coursework where the school have to provide the opportunity for the kids to fulfill the marking criteria but it is not stipulated exactly how. For example performance in a team game will be assessed as part of it, but it wont say it must be a particular sport. That will be down to the school to decide, so you have to ask your school what will be offered. Football is VERY commonly chosen for boys (and sometimes girls) just because as well as being popular, there is relatively little equipment the school need to provide and quite a few can be playing at once on one pitch.

You say your son is bright, so this is probably not an issue for him, but make sure he is aware that there will also be a significant amount of theory for him to learn which will involve more scientific/biological elements as well as theory of sports and games. I only say this because PE is a popular option where I work but many kids pick it because they think it will be no writing and all about running around!

My daughter has just picked her options and had been told she HAS to do GCSE PE. She's been asked to select four sports she is interested in off a list. Out of those she will be expected to opt for competing in, coaching in and refereeing in.

    this should explain:
