Cleaning Storage Heaters

Hi all!
The inevitable has happened and my electric storage heaters have started leaving black sooty marks up my walls. I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience of cleaning them - removing the front panel, hoovering, dusting? How not to get electrecuted? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to redecorate during my holidays in a couple of weeks only to be back in the same position when I switch them back on for the winter.
Cheers!

Radiator shelves over the heaters (the appropriate distance away so they don't get too hot) will stop the sooty streaks reaching the ceiling.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
