I'm not sure how someone giving you five pounds could be considered a scam.

Raise a new invoice through Paypal; when they pay you can mark it manually as payment received in eBay. They would still have buyer protection if they paid for it as goods, and ethically you should not ask them to send it as a personal payment, but that's only reasonable when buying something online. Meanwhile you get £5 but only have to pay fees on the closing eBay price.

A bit of a grey area, and obviously if you want to pay eBay a bit extra then that would only be fair, but I don't think in itself I would be too suspicious.

I can see why being offered £5 for something you actually want under £1 for might get the radar twitching! Probably the buyer has just wanted the item for a long time and is pleased to find and obtain it.

I once won an eBay auction for a drawing by an artist for £8, but paid her £20 because I felt it was an appropriate price to pay her for something that had clearly taken some time to complete. She thought I was up to something until she read the explanatory note.

...Several years on and she's now exhibiting in London with price tags of £400 - £1,000 ...so I don't have any regrets!
