They dont. The OP just got a duff one
I have lots of white gold rings and none of them ever have needed replating yet, some Ive had for 10 years and are only just needing it now.0 -

Yes, I also wanted a silver-coloured engagement ring and a yellow gold wedding ring. Platinum is expensive and can wear yellow gold down, so white gold was the way to go for me. Anyway we saw the ring in the window and fell in love with it without knowing what it was made of, we just had to have it
(pending price etc obviously!)
I had mine cleaned by the place we bought it just before the wedding (so it would be shiny on the day). I've had it almost two years now and it's fine, not wearing away at all. The shop has given me a lifetime of free replating, so if and when it needs doing I can take it there and they do it for free.0 -
Please forgive me here but I don't understand this white gold thing. Why choose it? Looks too much like silver!0

Some plating is better than others and last longer. My white engement ring stayed white for about 4 years before it started to yellow. My wedding ring is two coloured and after 2 years I can see the white prt staring to yellow slightly but I keep it on for cleaning , working etc etc so no surprise. You will just have to get it replated.0

Nothing wrong with silver. But if you pay for something which is more expensive but buy something which looks cheaper - like silver?0

Nobody thinks that way, though.
If you see a girl with a diamond engagement ring, you don't go "oh look, it's silver", you just assume that it's white gold or platinum.
Most of the point with jewellery isn't what it looks like, it's what it actually is...So, yes, in fact, my wife's platinum engagement and wedding rings could just as easily have been made from steel - and really, nobody would know any difference to look at. Likewise, the diamonds could actually just be glass and a lot of people wouldn't particularly tell the difference by looking. The fact remains, though, that they *are* platinum, they *are* diamonds and my wife and I know that - and the value reflects the materials involved.0 -
Sometimes you want something "more" than silver (for big stuff like engagement rings etc). My skin tone looks awful with yellow gold - so I've got a few things in white gold.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0

Yellow gold doesn't suit my skin tone, but white gold does, hence both my engagement ring and two wedding rings (long story, lost original, bought replacement, found original
) are white gold. And I agree with Idiophreak, I would look at someone's silver coloured wedding/engagement/eternity rings and presume they were either white gold or platinum, rather than silver. Silver is a much softer metal so will bear evidence of wear far quicker than the traditional engagement/wedding ring materials. A silver and a white gold ring might look the same to start with but you'd soon notice the difference!0
