weedkiller

The stuff available in garden centres and local nurseries seems to have been dumbed down probably to protect joe public from himself;)

I've used sodium chlorate and glyphosphate stuff from their shelves and recently it really does seem less effective.

I'm talking ground clearance paths etc and stuff for under hedges.

Having used the services of professional gardeners in a previous job, I know the effectiveness of the stuff they use, albeit probably sold under licence or such like.

What is the best available for garden use?

I too think the weedkillers available now have been 'dumbed down'. Used to use Pathclear and it was brilliant on gravel areas and along wall/drive edges, the stuff you get now is hopeless. You can tell its been changed as the colour is different. EU regulations changed the formulas of many weedkillers a few years back.

Yep exactly what I've found, can't kill weeds in the gravel under the hedge or even blitz an area I no longer want to plant.

Even the pathclear stuff I used on the lawn edging stones failed to even kill the grass.

I guess sodium chlorate was changed when it became common knowledge that a bit of sugar and you had a bomb in the garden shed?

Someone must know a source of some decent stuff.

As an aside I should ask a farmer mate of mine,
Many years back I asked him if he had a bit of left over fertiliser for the lawn, said he'd drop a bit off.
Came back 1 day and there was about a 1/4bag on the door step, the stuff they use for mowing grass I guess. Got a fair bit of lawn so used it all, back and front.

Had to mow twice a week for the rest of the year, the stuff wouldn't stop growing but it certainly did the trick, the grass just smoothered all the weeds.

When I eventually saw him he said there was enough in that bag to treat at least an acre:o:o:o:o

    Reckon he will have something;);)

Yes, but as your own story proves, sharing such information on the Internet may lead to people using chemicals indiscriminately.

Some years ago the EU called for all weedkillers to be tested. Some makers chose not to have their products checked.
I was a working gardener at the time and used various makes of bug and fungi and weedkiller and had noticed poor results.
This was before the EU testing. Probably a bit of Health and Safety nowadays but I did feel that I was being ripped off before.
Typical instructions on a Murphy product "if it doesn't work first time, try it again" .
So my fault for not applying it properly !!!!!, more likely the stuff was watered down .
Agree about the strength of weedkillers supplied to farmers but you do have to order in bulk.

That is totally unfare Dave, I didn't ask how to get unadulterated sodium chlorate for bomb making, I was simply explaining to others why it was withdrawn and asking if there was an alternative, if you can't help just say so, no need for the internet warrior attitude. :(:( sad.

I wasn't talking about bomb making, I was referring to your cavalier attitude with the fertilizer and imagining how a similar approach would work with agri-weedkillers.

Sodium chlorate withdrawal had nothing to do with it's 'alternative use' potential, which was curbed long, long before it went from the shelves.

You talk as if there are secret chemicals available only to farmers and other initiates, but anything I've used has been freely available to those willing to seek it out and pay for the larger quantities involved. I think someone else has already mentioned this. All the info is on the internet; just look at sites frequented by farmers, groundspersons, landscapers & the like.

My problem might be someone who somehow can't see what I've written.

I said " All the info is on the internet; just look at sites frequented by farmers, groundspersons, landscapers & the like."

When I type "Professional Weedkillers" into Google, the companies I deal with are on the first page. All the products they sell are clearly displayed, with descriptions of what they do.

There's no conspiracy. Nobody is keeping you from dealing with these firms. You may not want to pay £70 a litre though for a residual weedkiller, which seems to be what you are after.

    I wouldn't either.

Then maybe next time you can just say that and less of the "Hoisted by your own petard".

The question was quite simple, where to get decent weedkiller and given that this a moneysaving site I thought my intentions where quite straight forward.

    Thank you for your help.
