Selling Private Number Plate - best way to do this - ?? Value.?
Hi all
Changing cars & decided to sell the private number plate which was on my old car.
The number plate has now been placed on a retention document.
As I'm unsure how much its worth I contacted one of the many (many) companies that sell plates for a valuation. (Regtranfers.co.uk).
They have offered to pay me £400 on the sale of the plate but it isnt transparent how much they will be actually selling it for. (i.e. what their cut would be).
What would be the best way to sell this plate & how do I find out how much I should be asking?
The number plate in question is R8 EME.
Cheers for any advice.

Just tried another company who have offered £600 on sale of the plate !! (Nationalnumbers.co.uk).
The also say that they charge 20 - 30% as commission.
That would value the plate at around £800 - does that sound right? Was it really "everybody" that was Kung Fu fighting ???0 -
Sell it yourself,E Bay ? ,my experience of these number plate sales companies is not good0

A quick check on the DVLA website shows that there are currently 556 prefix 'EME' registrations available for sale starting from £255. That is your competition and unless someone is specifically looking for the EME combination with the R8 prefix, you need to price yours accordingly to be in with a chance of selling it.
My advice would be to first decide on a price that you are happy with. Then notify the dealers of the amount you want returning on completion of sale. It's up to them how much they decide to add on for their commission, as long as you get the figure you want.
As redmalc says, you could also have a go at selling it yourself via ebay or by listing it on a few free classified websites. There is no harm in listing it in as many places as you can.0 -
Personally i think the retention fee is above what the plate is worth.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

You can find its true value by selling it on ebay. You might strike lucky but I wouldn't be expecting three figures for it.
Remember that if you surrender it back to DVLA they will refund you the £80 assignment fee. If you sell it on ebay remember to add this £80 to the selling price (but clearly state this in the auction listing)0 -

The R8 bit is potentially the seller here. You need to find an owner of a nice new Audi.
Beyond that, the plate is worth what someone will pay for it. eBay is potentially the best way to test that out.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
I would ignore the 'valuation' given. The plate isn't worth a huge amount, in my view. I bought a plate that was on retention, from one of my bosses at work. He said he'd had it valued at £750. I didn't really want to buy it but the wife wanted it for her car. The plate is still on the car so I'm not going to quote it but it a nice combination of her initials and the make of the car. I think I gave him £250 for it.
What does the plate mean to you? Or, did you just inherit it? You could keep it on retention until you buy an Audi R8? Otherwise find an R8 owner, or, alternatively find someone in REME (armed forces). Specific plates like mine and yours are a difficult sell.0 -
For R8EME, I would try advertising it in Soldier magazine as the number may be of interest to someone in the REME Regiment (Royal Electrical and Mechanic Engineers).
I've never heard of DVLA taking back a registration number that has been issued previously. They advertise all their numbers as 'never been issued'."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

If you are referring to Smi1er's post, DVLA will refund the £80 transfer fee which is paid in advance when a registration is placed on retention. The registration is cancelled and can not be reissued by DVLA under current rules.
Effectively all DVLA retention documents and certificates of entitlement have a cash in value of £80. Please note the refund can only be issued to the Grantee or the Purchaser respectively.0
