Nuatha thats great news your OH is finally on the mend very pleased to hear it,not long now til the wedding is it?

I've always just pottered along through life just being me..I don't deliberately try not to fit in but a lot of the time I just don't for whatever reason..but hey I'm comfortable in my own skin.

I have no time for gossiping at the school gates and prefer my own company to be honest now,I spent so much time in isolation due to the boys issues it gets to be a habit!

Cool for dinner..I like being self employed, if tea break takes too long the boss wont moan! My OH thinks my shelf filling is quite mad:) And then theres the learning interesting skills, thankyou for making me feel less strange...but am I the only one who has a full zombie/general apocalypse/SHTF plan sorted out with family and close friends?! :S

Mrs LW, do you have any special tips for slow-cooking your rhubarb to freeze for later? Do you add sugar or anything or just cook it as it comes? The rhubarb in the garden which has looked a bit weedy for a couple of years is taking off at last :j

Please take note of this proposed EU directive (imminent!) to restrict distribution of older/heirloom seeds and act accordingly

With thanks to a poster on P2S

I absolutely despair. The world has gone utterly bonkers. Seems to me there's S flying about all over the place and people can't see it for shoes, handbags and celebrity gossip:(.

Have signed the petition and shared on FB, I truly hope it doesn't go through, but will be sharing and saving my seeds regardless. Am considering a bulk buy from Realseeds just in case

  • I just love reading this thread :D It's like coming home.

Moved house almost two years ago and notified the TV licence people that we were only using the TV for our own DVDs and playing games. So any day now they will be sending out the letters telling us that they don't believe that we don't want to join the masses in watching the dumbed down TV :D They have no idea how liberating it is not to be tied to a box in the corner. It takes us ages to go through a series on DVD. We spend as much of our spare time as possible out in the garden.

We do have an addictive internet habit though

And I have masses of books.

This has been on several gardening forums and many of us have sent off emails to the commissioners in the EU. It's 'fingers crossed' time - I suspect they have received thousands of emails - at least they have some indication that we are not happy!

Morning all,my idea of torture today but, it has to be done, I'm off to t'city for a look at what might be available as a wedding outfit for late August when DD2 and her lovely OH are getting married. I do NOT do clothes shopping, I hate the primped and made up and bejewelled ladies of a certain age that always seem to work in those shops selling smart things, who hover while you are trying things on yukkkkkkkk!!!! Howsomever, it has to be done, so with gritted teeth I go!!!

PERPLEXED PINEAPPLE I cut the rhubarb into chunks about 1" in size, pre heat the Slow Cooker on high and then add the rhubarb and about 1/2 a pint of boiling water from the kettle. Then I just leave it alone on high and in 2 to 2 1/2 hours I have perfectly cooked rhubarb in perfect chunks. I use a liquid sweetener H*rm*sitas is the one we like and add in as much as you personally like. Let it all cool down and drain off most of the juice until it is as dry as you like for a crumble filling. I got some of those foil containers from the pound shop big enough to each take 2 portions of crumble and put them into the freezer with the crumble uncooked on top of the cooked fruit. Works well and you don't need to defrost them before cooking, just into a warm oven I do Fan 180/190 deg C until the crumble is cooked through, hope that helps, Cheers Lyn xxx.

I always think of myself as totally normal, and everyone else as weird!! rather than the other way round. You lot all sound totally crackers, nice, interesting, well informed, well read, but crackers! :)

    katie
:D Oi, Missus! I'll have you know that the only crackers in my flat are the Tosspots cream crackers in t'cupboard. Although I do have two of those square orange Jac0bs cracker boxes storing the candle cache. Weeel, some of the candle cache.

:D Welcome to the tribe. Love the username, too.

I think hunting and gathering and laying in stocks is probably hardwired into the psyche. I certainly feel the urge to nest and store food particularly sharply when the nights start drawing in. Winter's coming, will we make it til Spring? Hard to comprehend that for most of human history, this was reality for most people, and until relatively modern times.

If you were too fey or just f e c k l e s s (the sweary filter always thinks this word needs editing out), you probably wouldn't make it.

Friend and neighbour SuperGran has been helping out one of our unemployed neighbours with food parcels (he's also been to the food bank). He's not a bad man but he is an alcoholic and that's where his money goes. I've told SG to tip him the nod about the Magic Greengrocer and getting into Tosspots at 4 pm on Sunday for splendiferous bargains like wholemeal loaves at 10p. She's promised she'll signpost him.

:D It's funny about TV. I never was much of a fan, We didn't have TV when I was a small child as they were relatively expensive in the 1960s and we were very poor. When we did get one, I was already established as a free-ranging outdoor child with a serious book-habit and had very little interest in sitting still watching stuff. With the exception of Blue Peter which has a lot to answer-for, inc my hardwired perception that sticky-back plastic is an expensive item, based on me crazing Mum for it, as per BP, and being told we couldn't afford it.

:o I have some now. From £land. Because I'm worth it.

In the 1980s I was living in a Scottish city close by a topographical feature which meant that my little b & w portable had the most appalling signal; every figure had 8 ghost figures trailing it. I gave the TV away and never bothered again. When I get the cast-off newspapers from SG I sometimes cast my eyes down the telly schedules and consider that I would have to be very well-paid indeed to waste my time on such carp. Talk about prolefeed and bread-and-circuses.

Back in the eighties, when there were very few channels, many people would have seen what you had seen and there were lots of conversations which started; Did you see............?

I'd just say No and the other party would usually be so astonished that I didn't have a telly that they would bang on and on and on about it until it became a major drag. As if I was making some kind of point and, in some way, putting them down for watching TV themselves.

Fast-forward to more recent times and I find more and more people who don't watch TV at all, or very little. A mixture of many other interesting things to do with one's time (hel-lo interweb!) and a disgruntlement with the quality of broadcast offerings.

Right, just gotta finish this cuppa and then hit the road fork w*rk ('scuse my Klatchian).

:D Be good. And if you can't be good, make sure you're having a ball and come back later with all the goss.

ETA; Mrs LW, I feel your pain. I hate clothes-shopping with a passion and getting dolled up is something I do very occasionally and under duress. I scrub up well but it's so not me that I feel like an alien. Be strong.
