Well I know as a gardener Mar it's definitely been a bit more challenging these last few years than I've ever known before even down here in the relatively balmy south east!

It was just the mention on that programme of the jetstream being blocked and the fact that thats what the BBC kept saying on their forecasts when we had the cold weather, maybe just a coincidence I dunno?

This past week has been more like typical April weather sunshine and showers BUT the temperature swings have been just ludicrous..25 degrees in the day then -3 overnight

Next week is looking similar too but having said that the gardens around here have never looked so healthy even the unkept ones so go figure lol

BTW yesterdays bread recipe was a success, none left for today so have a batch of white panny rolls on,trying a pepper and cheese loaf tomorrow *dribble* will post recipe later
  • We will just have to find out what will grow in our part of the world under these conditions and grow that, it's only what our ancestors did after all. We would lack choice, certainly the range of choices we currently have, and probably the food would be bland, sameish and boring, but it would keep us alive and sustained wouldn't it? I think we've been really spoilt over the last 50 years and will have to learn to live on what we have locally, not what we want from the rest of the world!!!

I think you're right Lyn I've been spoilt for choice here with mild winters and reasonable summers til now,we can grow pretty much anything usually.

Over the years the boys tastes have changed and the way I grow certain things have too I don't think even here we can be complacent about the weather now so it makes things interesting :D

I just found a wholemeal breadmix in the cupboard so have bunged that in the panny and added mustard powder, chilli flakes, bacon bits and some herby salt and pepper.
If the SHTF first thing I'd have to do is plant a field of wheat the amount of bread we get through in this house is ridiculous :D

D&DD looking forward to the pepper and cheese loaf as I bought 2kg of grated mazzarella for £1.99 on the local market yesterday and need to find something different to do with it. Im guessing I can freeze it? will have a google and see. otherwise its cheesy meals all round this week :rotfl:

Its cold and miserable here today so am leaving the greenhouse safely zipped up so I dont ruin anything. Its too cold to even potter out there.

Off to do an order for Mr S to stock up again, using the cash the bank gave me for the last !!!!-up. They sent me a text message to say I would be paying OH's loan and had set up a direct debit for me to do so :mad::mad: His PPI ran out before the end of the loan (of course) and their solution was for me to pay it - I mentioned it may be fraud and they sorted it amazingly quickly. I intend to get out from under the bank as soon as possible and just use them for benefit to go in and straight out. Their continual !!!!-ups are now telling on my health.

Last night we watched the two progs on the volcanos and it was thought provoking even though we had seen them before. I think watching stuff over is good because I always seem to notice things I have missed the first time.
Thanks also for the link on Katla.

On the subject of clothes I have several bin bags in the loft and a bulging wardrobe (me a hoarder never, just being prepared :D) My weight fluctuates, I kept my favorite things from the early 80s in size 12 vowing one day they would fit again. At my heaviest I was size 24 but never lost hope. Since I buy what suits rather than whats fashionable it saved me a fortune when I finally got back to size 12 again 20yrs later. Unfortunately I've had health probs and gone up a few sizes again:( However I have about 30 pairs of jeans in various sizes so when I loose weight again I won't need to go shopping. It's all good labels so I probably do have about £4000 worth if I had to replace it all with new, but most of it was charity shop stuff so never paid the silly prices at next etc.

On the subject of chipped domestic appliances and smart meters too, I was called an alarmist and all sorts years ago when I mentioned this to some. I will hold out as long as I can before giving in to this technology. I like to be in control of my home and my own space, but it seems that control is being stolen bit by bit and there's nowt much I can do. So many people seem taken in by it all under the guise of how it will make life easier or how it will help save the planet etc. If only people could or would see the bigger picture. Unfortunately I think by the time they realise it will be too late. I am sure those of us here and else where that have questioned the motives of the corps and gov are already seen as non compliant and labeled as such, but I like my freedom of choice and it saddens and scares me how this is being taken away. How long before computers and tvs and phones are openly watching and listening to us. Perhaps I am being paranoid, but people told me that when I talked about chips to control the use of domestic appliances years ago.
Then there's the micro chipping of people and clothing already being trialled, how long before this is accepted by the masses. Scarey times ahead I think. Anyway sorry for the rant off to watch youtube and add some stuff to my wish list.

  • If TPTB are watching us via the TV I guarantee they'll be one of two things, bored out of thier minds or giggling like crazy at the two fools and thier lurcher trying to cope with life in 2013!!!!! Let them look, if they spot anything interesting I hope they tell us about it cos we'll miss it for sure!!! Lyn xxx.

Yes, they would certainly cringe at my fashion sense some days and probably snigger at our naivety and theories. I do worry though at how the world is changing and the implications for the younger generations.

Katla is continuing to shudder. Just shown oh, he loves those kind of webcams. If we see it blow then we'll be off to the shops and getting the masking tape out.

Just been thinking of useful things for the stock, first aid, bob etc. We use various essential oils in the burner depending on how we feel physically or emotionally. I've added tea tree (even though I hate the smell) to the first aid kit along with peppermint and lavender does anyone have any other suggestions ?
