Sorry to hear he's poorly again, gallstones are so painful, DD1 had her gall bladder removed 9 years ago and she was so uncomfortable beforehand. I think he's in the best place for pain control and being fed and looked after. So sorry to hear there are problems with his relationship, thank goodness he has the rest of you to look out for him, hope he's at least more comfy soon, Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Hi,
Re the money discussion, I think we here are some of the few that can recognise that the most important things in life can't be bought with money. The thing is society is, for want of a better word, programmed to aspire to have money as that makes us good little workers, keeps the wheels of the religion of economy working by encouraging us to buy all those lovely things that TV and glossy mags show us, making lots of money for those that already have pots of it but have a gambling addiction (ie financial/banking system). I remember asking someone once what he'd do if he won the lottery, turns out he didn't have a clue:( Someone else dreamt of opening a B&B in a seaside town. I pointed out that winning the lottery wasn't essential to realise that dream, nor is it for many others. Lots of people dream of just being able to work less and have more time with their family and to do things they like to do. Instead of dreaming about becoming rich, if you decide that you don't have to redecorate every year, don't have to have a new wardrobe of clothes every season, don't have to take expensive holidays or have fancy pants cars, etc, etc. Then you can work less and realise your dream that way. When I decided to work part time people asked if I'd come into money and when I said I'd rather have the time than the money they looked at me as if I was mad and muttered about how they couldn't afford it, whilst buying into all of the above.
Anyhoo, I got my spuds in today and some more onions. Had some lovely chats with some of the other allotment holders too. Lovely day.
My sharpening stone arrived and is quite a lot larger that I thought, will have fun sharpening up all my garden tools. Simple things eh?

You are so right Jayne, I think we all,on here, strive for the simple things and thats what makes it such a great thread. Prepping means that when you have your personal messy fan moment you dont have to run round like an idiot spending money you dont have.
I personally would happily do without anything just to have quality time with DGS and basically giving up work to look after OH has meant that I have had time to spend with DD during her pregnancy, be there at the birth and look after him when ever I wanted to or I was needed. Yes I wish we hadnt had a lot of the trials we have gone through but nothing could replace the last 3 years with my precious boy.
I can just about afford to get by and make the most of everyday. I dont want handbags or shoes, new furniture or bigger tvs. I enjoy pennypinching and making everything I can. My life is mostly happy apart from OH's health and DGS's trials with autism and money couldnt fix either of those things so I wont waste my money on lottery tickets. As long as I have the tinterweb to keep up with all you dear friends Im set xClearing the junk to travel light

Thats exactly how I feel JayneC! I work part time and love having time at home. I think "pottering about at home" is a very under rated hobby!

Indeed, I'm so busy doing nothing in particular - baking, gardening, etc that I don't know how I had time to work full time:D and being able to help out DD2 with her little ones is precious to us both.
I find that having that bit more time at home helps save the pennies too as I can shop around for bargains - go to the local shops and have a chat ( and sometimes a discount;)), mooch around the charity shops, grow my own food, cook from scratch and so on and so on...Official DFW nerd - 282 'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts'

Priority always was having loved ones in my life and being happy. I work on a limited budget, my luxury is food, the essentials are paying bills.
Its funny I see such ordinary things as giving pleasure. I always did.
Example my mandoline slicer last weekend, a jar of honey with added whiskey. Last night my first Kilner jar probably the only one I'll need. Why? I may think of baking some sourdough bread and need the jar for keeping the living dough mixture. I may get back to baking bread eventually.
Its finding YS items like tonight. If I had the space there were loads of lamb and beef reduced. I did buy £6 of beef for £2 and if I portion it out I can get 4 meals out of it.
I found an Army Surplus store so I may soon be experiencing the joys that GQ does in such places.
Another pleasure...my trainers are about dropping off my feet but I found a shop selling designer goods discounted £15-£20 but worth around £55.
However, the shoe shop on the town had mine in again so I found some for £9.99 so for £19.99 I was able to buy two pairs. OK they are not branded but I'm happy."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
