Just seen the news about Texas - terrible (whatever the cause). Thoughts with our American cousins. Thankfully a rare event (well at least till recently it was  ). Reportedly evacuating for 2 miles around the incident with the possibility of further evacuation if the wind changes. Yet one more reason to have a grab and go bag (in my case GAG applies rather than BOB).
When I was on a "disaster" team, part of our briefing was film of a serious fire at a local chemical works. Fire officers hosing down flames running on the ground to prevent spread. Fortunately someone on the works staff explained to the fire service lead that the tanks stored immediately behind the officers (towards which the flames were trying to spread) contained highly explosive material with a low combustion temperature. They re-doubled their efforts and hosed down the tanks as well.
The works was well and truly hung out to dry by the HSE afterwards because they had chemicals for which they did not have licences and others in quantities exceeding agreed limts etc.
This works was just outside the centre of a major city and has since been re-located. They reckon it could have taken out much of the nearby housing estate/flats, the inner ring road and part of the rail network. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
awful news texas.....wealth ... would just like to be comfortable, so turned away from consumerism... that old chestnut some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing. from national insurance contributions statement (you can order if you think there are gaps in your work history which could affect your pension) for 3 years in late 90s to late to pay meaning no credits... when i was working full time... managed to find a solitary pay slip from that period... will send off today......btw in year 2000 was on a paltry 4.28 an hour... sorry for going on0

Thanks for the info D&DD will read the whole article as we have the Telegraph. It's not the H7N9 strain that they have in China and not dangerous to humans as it's not an H5 or H7 strain we'll all have to look out for MAR though, she's coming down with a dose of yellow beak and webbed feetitis due to all the rain in her neck of the woods, keep her away from the other duckies or we'll have GQ sending Nursie up to Scotland direct from Heathrow when she lands after returning from Softstuff in Oz!!!! My goodness that would be the battle of the titans wouldn't it??? Cheers Lyn xxx.0

I'm probably the only person I know who thinks that winning the lottery might actually be a bit of a nightmare, rather than an unalloyed delight. I did try to explain this to an American once; poor bloke was completely baffled as the idea of not wanting vast amounts of money was complete anathema to him & against everything his culture had ever taught him. But imagine hiding behind locked doors all your life, afraid that everyone was after your money, that no-one wanted to know you just for your own self, that people were only nice to you because you were rich - I've known as many people cursed with too much, as with too little.
Maybe its a prepper thing as OH and I always say we wouldn't want the huge amounts. TBH the most I would want if we were to win something like the lottery would be about 1/2 mill as it would enable us to get a house with land around here and leave us mortgage free, get a newer vehicle and have a small amount left in the bank for emergencies. To us that would be rich and very happy and is our dream situation and I would be very glad others wouldn't see us as "wealthy". I suppose its a prepper thing not wanted to become a target or stand out.

ALI How's your BIL getting on these days? Is he managing at home or has he had to go back in for treatment? Hope all is well.
Re the being rich thing, I get the impression that most of us, despite the frivolity and tongue in cheek humour that is prevalent amongst the participants have our feet pretty much on the ground and a fairly level outlook on life. Even if we aren't able to have all the frills that are apparently what we need to make us happy, I'd say that all of us, even those with problems make a pretty good effort to live a good life and do the best we can with what we have, and if we can't have it all, we have the best time we can with what we do have. There is a level of competence and perseverance and sheer gutsiness that makes me proud to know you all, you're a group of battlers, at your best when the chips are down, good on all of you, Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -

Well he did come home for a while and was doing really well considering, still very weak and struggling to get around, but we got a call this morning to say he is back in hospital. It appears he know has gallstones and is in alot of pain so maybe more ops for him.
Turns out SIL "doesn't do" cooking so they live off ready meals which can't have helped tbh. SIL had already been moaning to him asking when he will be back at work (MIL and FIL and really mad with her but won't say a word and we don't like to interfere). In laws slipped him some cash as SIL has now started saying her wages are "her" money and she can't afford to get stuff for him, but she has still managed to go out on the lash every weekend since he came home. OH is going up with FIL later on to see BIL on the ward as SIL is "too busy" to keep visiting the hospital .
MIL is wondering if SIL is starting to pull away from BIL ready to leave him. TBH they had issues before he was ill and perhaps living with someone who clearly has issues with alcohol herself may not be the best place for BIL, but we will see what happens. Thanks for asking tho lol. Families eh .
