There is a fab picture in next weeks Radio Times featuring one of the Doomesday Preppers (starts next Wed 5 Sept, 10pm, National Geographic). This guy's stash include 4,380 freeze dried meals with a 20 year sholf life and canned pork, beef, chicken and turkey (amount not specified) with an expiry date of 2027. Its amazing!!!

If we could find similar product with a shelf life like that and they were not priced too high we'd be well set...just as well most of us are prepared not to stick to best before dates...we could virtually do away with shopping for food again and money saved might free it up to be used for other things like the increase every year in rents, council tax, the new bedroom tax, transport costs, utility bills etc...

A bit more prepared today, after stashing the butter! Helped DH to fix the wood shed roof, which was rotten, by sawing a piece of an old door that we had in the garden and and shaping it to fit the top of the shed. Tomorrow we are both out but Friday night will find us nailing shed felt on the new roof!

What do people do to stay fit to be able to cope physically with hardship? I am a real softie with that, so have started increasing the intensity of my workouts, but have to go very carefully because of joint problems. Earlier on I forced myself to go out for a walk and walked fast (ish!) up two long hills. Felt better at the end!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Well I was driving home from work today along the coast road when a flash flood hit - It rose so quickly that the car in front of me quickly became engulfed after attempting to drive through a long flooded puddle - had to be pushed out of the flood by guys in waders - very scarey. I was fine but stuck between two floods - it took 2 hours to clear. I was fine, had wellies, snacks and water in the boot along with a phone, but many were really stuck without even propor shoes. It was a freak storm of massive hailstones.

We used to keep a bug out bag of sorts, as had frequent short-notice trips in air ambulances. I used to keep a set of lounge clothes for me and son, toiletries, long life soy milk, cereal and tinned hummus (to allow hospital time to cater for his allergies) pens and paper and a couple of travel games. It was really useful, and we always replenished it as soon as we came home.

I like the old prescription idea in a BOB I'll be doing that, thank you. You were prepared for that one WCS. I would not have been.

It's very rural here, and I still have the island mentality from when we lived there - I've only recently stopped travelling with a chainsaw in the boot!:)

People were really panicking though - I was surprised, as we weren't in any real danger, just inconvenienced

I've been meaning to add this link in for ages sorry
    http://disabilities.temple.edu/aacvocabulary/e4all.shtml

One of the downloads has a pain chart/communication board.
We always presume we and indeed our family will be able to communicate/speak to people if need be,but shock, injuries etc can sometimes render this means of communication useless.

A disabled family member may have a speech problem due to for example a stroke or a learning disability or Autism etc.

A small child may be able to point to where something hurts but not verbally communicate.

I have to think outside the box with my boys BOB's and there are some really great resources on this site for people with differing needs

Westcoastscot :T:T well done on staying calm!!! Glad to hear you're safe X

Good grief, you must have got such a fright! Wellies are one thing that I dont keep in the car. I use them twice a day, every day when walking the puppy.

How do you feel about a BOB that is in a shopping tolley? (look away GQ jiffy will have the heebies!)

If I get a job tomorrow, it will mean that I can't walk to 6 miles to get my shopping cheap from the butchers. It means that my shopping trolley becomes redundant and I'm not very happy about that!

So, until there's a time I need her, how do you think she would fare being useful sat in the cupboard all prepared for emergencies rather than sat there all useless and empty?

Is it practical? Can you think of any instances that it will cause problems. She's a two wheeler. :)

Oh westcoastscot a shock whether you have prepared or not, just glad all were ok.

We don't live in a flood plain but do live at the bottom of deep hills that used to end in a big plain, but this has all being built on as well as the hills so no where for water to go but by us and we have not quite been flooded but have had water lapping at the doorstep and only rain stopping in time prevented that. Its one of the reasons I want my stores upstairs. This past week we have had quite a few cars bombing along not thinking about how deep water is and they end up skidding all over the place, no damage this time but a car or two in the garden is not unknown.

I have charts among my bits that show Braille plus instructions how to make the alphabet, sign language and hand language to use for with those blind and deaf. I have over the years tried to learn it, but at least the charts would be something to help to communicate if needed.

I need to go through everything as its all been dumped in store room and mixed up with not been able to go camping for a so long. Today went in there to get some dressings and found some in an old rucksack along with whistle that contains waterproof matches and compass I had totally forgotten I had.

Fuddle I plan to use Ethel ( the 4 wheeled trolley I bought last week)as a BOB as only need if for shopping on rare occasions when I go out on my own, currently once a year tops:rotfl:
