Grandma, thank you once again for a very useful post. I could make one of those easily and will set about sourcing the poly beads, Im sure I can find some cheap somewhere. Very simple instructions too. I fancied making one of those but could only find ones to buy. I have bookmarked it ready for production :j

It's an excellent compost activator and can be used (diluted) as a plant feed too, quite shameful that we flush it down the loo really:D

Thanks for the rabbit eating advice folks and Helen2k8 any advice, hints or tips most gratefully received, thank you

RAS thanks for the link, will watch it properly later. I've seen it in Permaculture magazine before but not that film, tis amazing isn't it?

Managed to get a few seeds into trays so at least I'm making a start.. BTW wcs your toms and curcubits should get a bit bushier if you get them in a good light spot. I wouldn't think about putting them out any time soon though (May at the earliest/June really), but you can pot them on and keep them under cover until then.

I just baked a spud in the woodburner and was stupidly excited that it worked wonderfully. Had a look at the wondercooker linky and I've been considering fashioning a version of this will some insulation I got a meat delivery in. Will have to try it out and see if it works.

Thanks JayneC I have them on a sunny windowsill - we have frosts here until end May/early June.
I make baked tatties in the ashpan of my stove, and have a dutch oven for when the power goes off. I'm going to start using it more on my days off to save electricity - am going to try bread in it also, after watching Ray Mears make damper over an open fire.

:D Urine was used for millenia as part of washing and bleaching wool (esp the white woollen togas of ancient Rome). I think one of the famously-thrifty Flavian emperors (Vespasian?) even put a tax on it or summat.

That really is taking the p.

I recall watching something on TV once, think it was some experimental archaeologists, who were using ancient recipes for dyeing textiles and one of the recipes specified that the urine from pre-pubescent boys should be used as the mordant to fix this particular dyestuff.

Lo and behold, practical experiments proved that it was boys' urine not any other age or gender's urine which worked. I always wonder at the bizarre set of circumstances which led to the oldtimers discovering that.............:rotfl:

Been bliddy cold here today, due to be below freezing tonight, am thankful for a warm clean bed to sleep in.

My Nan was a newly-wed in WW2 and her first ever Xmas dinner as a wife was a wabbit. And, as she remarked recently, she doesn't even like wabbits. But times were tough and you ate what you could get and counted yourself fortunate.

Rabbit is a poor quality meat and if your main diet, it's actively dangerous as it robs the body of nutrients. As a part of the whole diet it shouldn't be actively harmful. I must admit I'd be tempted to go after the many species of deer which are about in the UK in shocking numbers. They even come into this city, esp those pesky muntjac, but even big burgers like red deer have come into the city suburbs, i know people who have found red deer in their back gardens.

There's an awful lot of meat on the hoof out there......

In modern sedentary societies, we're taught to demonise fat but it is a crucial source of nutrients and calories and we're in deep trouble without it. I've read accounts of people who went into wilderness situations and within 2-3 months had lost more than half their bodyweight and were on the threshold of death with no subcutaneous fat whatsoever. Scary.

:D As part of my prepping I have been laying up some subcutaenous fat, just to make sure I'm not going to be caught out in an emergency. I carry it with me at all times.

    A.

Rabbit is ok in a pie (rabbit and peach is a family favourite) or baked under stuffing, but I agree you wouldn't want to eat it all the time. And 'big burgers' reminded me that we have venison burgers in the freezer... and I was wondering what to have to eat tomorrow evening :rotfl:

Don't know about the plant feed but it is male urine that works as a compost activator, so don't bother saving yours up ladies.

There are plenty of chargers that will take AA and AAA batteries (some will take PP3 too), but not many that will take D Cells as well.

You are probably looking at two separate chargers.

I've got one of these which, while limited to charging just two batteries at a time (and takes around 12 hours for D Cells :( ), is completely free to run. ;)

Ahhh...i thought that might be the case TBH. Still, might be worth doing in the long run.

Is that a solar charger? Don't spose you've got a link?

Regarding batteries, try this if you need AA and only have the tiny AAA ones.

I remember reading this article years ago about IVF...they use lady wee in the hormones you have to inject yourself with. They collected it from nuns

So ours isn't completely useless then! :rotfl:
