I've got ME and I'm not like that, but I was always doing ten things at once and never sat down. When kids were tiny I worked 2 jobs and when they were older I worked nights. I blame too much work and bad eating patterns.

My mum told me about her younger brother being injured in WW2 in Germany and going out into the countryside to barter cigars (which my grandfather made at home) for eggs or cheese etc to take to him in hospital when he had lost his leg.

Strangely enough when her brother met my uncle in Scotland who had also lost a leg on the opposing side of the war - they got on like a house on fire.

Barter can take on lots of forms- booze, fags, coffee, tea, cosmetics, lighters, skills of any kiind

I remember the power cuts in the 70s and trying to find candles when they had all gone - thought outside the box- bought passover candles from delicatessen and candles from an art and gift shop before anyone else had the idea. Also got sugar and salt from health food shops when ordinary shops had run out.

  • Whatever happens, it's unlikely that there will be a major shortage of things to use as toilet paper, at least so long as there are toilets (when we're in the territory of long-drops and temporary trenches then using leaves won't seem so bad). If the economy really tanks then there's always the option of using £5 notes - if you think that sounds daft think about the best use for a Zimbabwean dollar and it's really not far from the truth.

off shoppping this pm, and might invest in a bottle of brandy & also a bottle of TCP (if they still make it). I found some anteseptic ointment in an old wash bag, dated 2008!

Not sure if it is ok to use, but will replace it anyway!

but when you only have yourself to think of, there is isn't anywhere to go out to and you don't want to spend money for the sake of it, what else are you going to do?
Imo it's down to us whether there is only us to think of. Me I'm thinking of volunteering when the weather improves. Meanwhile I'm grateful for my collie because she is a living breathing presence and I have needs other than my own to think of (I guess if I wasn't physically able I would have something that didn't need walking - like a gerbil or a goldfish or something :rotfl:).
Socially there are usually opportunities to mix with others locally at little or no cost and for oldies like me there is online stuff like University of the 3rd Age.
As for being on ones own, it comes to most of us at some point - and sometimes even by choice. Here's some stats
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2012/mar/30/the-rise-of-solo-living
Plus many of us don't have family either.
But again there is often an element of choice as to whether one is lonely as a result.. Sometimes we just have to make ourselves get out there/communicate. It's not always easy - Pineapple battles daily against procrastination as well as a natural tendency to shut herself off ;)
If I lived in a castle with a moat and a drawbridge it would be a daily struggle not to just pull up the bridge and say 'See ya world'!
Fortunately I'm procrastinating on the castle idea....... ;)

Have 3 tuna tins ready to go, but no lids, thought I might put them in a plastic bag to keep dry just in case. Have been watching tutorials and thought I might try a slight variation with a vaseline covered cotton wool ball in the middle to make lighting easier. Whadaya think? I have copious amounts of cardboard due to being an Avon rep, so good to find a use for it.

What did you use to make the holes? I really want to try this but don't know how to get the holes.

GQ I hope you have fun on Red Nose Day, we will get our usual email from the boss, Mr Shouty. Telling us that we are not to take part, not to dress up, not to have any fun at all as the school is a place of work and all fun is banned!

Pineapple I am doing more and hope that will increase when I get my bus pass. Though having to sort out my dental work will get in the way now...ouch!

I did go out for about an hour last night just to say I had made the effort.
