You could run kids birthday parties/craft days/afternoons with those.
It's been suggested, also for me to run classes for kids and adults for Slow Sewing with your Vintage Machine. But honestly, the huge amount of paperwork, disclosures, H&S and all the rest is a complete turn off when it comes to working with children. I'd much rather just have a couple of DD's pals round for the afternoon and do it like any other sort of play activity.Val.0 -
,Where do people not in catering get catering-sized food cans, I'd like to have a play about.
I got mine in B&M, a couple of years ago they were selling huge short dated catering size tins of pineapple chunks for £1 a tin. I bought (ahem) quite a lot of it, made pineapple jam, crushed pineapple sauce for ice cream and cake filling, made pineapple upside down cake and crumble and cheesecake and on top of ham etc till the family started to take the p*** every time I mentioned pineapple. I think I gave a couple of tins away as joke presents as well and I'm sure one made it into the school tombola. I've still got a tin left somewhere, I think, two years out of date now. I must get it out and use it up.Val.0 -
Betony thank you for the info, please feel free to correct me, I am always glad to learn new things. I would have sworn that the Cicoria is dandelion family, the leaves look so similar! I have found the link to all things Cicoria if anyone is interested in buying the seeds BTW, I recommend the Pan di Zucchero as a salad and the Puntarelle di Brindisi for the recipe I gave earlier on, with garlic and chilli. http://www.seedsofitaly.com/catalogue/6
Nuatha thank you for info. re. one day bushcraft courses, I would love to do one where you don't have to hunt down, kill and skin bunnies! The basics such as shelter water and vegetable foraging at this stage are ok for me. Will have a search.
Edited to say: here is the link for SE England, there is a family bushcraft course on Wed 29th August, I have emailed to ask for info!

This morning DS took me out for my first bike ride in years, a bit wobbly but I made it, and the bike is working! My first steps towards moving away from the zombies (rather than spearing their brains with my sharpened toothbrush) LOL!
DH and I also split some more logs with the log splitter, the instruction recommend that beginners don't use it for more than half hour at a time. We laughed, but now I can see why! I only used it for 10 minutes at most and my arms are shaking with exhaustion! Will have to build up on that.
Changed Avatar (thank you D&DD!)Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
we popped into "Go Outdoors" today and I treated myself to this as it was reduced to less than half price their price (I got it for £8.00) http://www.multitools.co.uk/victorinox-swiss-card-lite-3-0-99202?utm_source=GoogleBase&utm_medium=GB&utm_campaign=GoogleBase&gclid=CLf195e3hbICFaTJtAodSUMAmg and it fits in my purse perfectly
I am not quite sure what I would do with one of those, but I love it, and want one for my handbag!
I really enjoy this thread, and am so pleased it hasnt been moved.

katie: I have so often needed so many of the things in that little kit and to have it so compact it fits in my purse makes me so happy! scissors, various screw drivers, knife, pen, pin, light, magnifier, ruler. ok I might not be able to fight off the zed heads with it but I can sure as hell mend a pair of glasses when needed! and in the dark if necessary!Blah0 -
too funny!

The tiny screw had dropped out and been lost and I stripped the plastic from the tie with my Swiss Army knife and we threaded it thru the screw hole. Almost as fast to do as to type.
A country person should always have string and a pocketknife, dontcha know.
Errmm, just want to make it clear that neither myself nor the mendee were driving the minibus at the time!
I've just acquired a darling little flat hinged tin which I shall make into a handbag sewing kit. I shall add some felt from my sewing scraps as a liner and stick needles (several, prthreased with black and white cotton), plus a pair of snips and a few safety pins and a few straight pins, some ultra strong nylon thread and keep it in the pocket of my bag.
Read an Army trick which might be useful to those of us who use hiking boots; change your bootlaces for paracord. Much stronger. And use double the length you need and have a ready supply of cord for emergencies. You can never have to much paracord...........:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Don't forget that fleece doesn't need hemming as it doesn't fray so you just cut your lengths of fleece blanket, cutting off any hemming already there, then cut 1inch slits about 1cm apart at each end to make tassles
Simples - I made 5 out of a £2.99 fleece the year before last and they were much longer than the ones I normally buy for the kids which cost considerably more
(If you felt really creative you could easily make a 2 scarves, 2 hats and 2 pairs of welly liners from one blanket. A simple hat would be a rectangle of fabric sewn up the long edge, then cut long tassles round the top end and tie with a strip of fleece - too easy!)
