Delurking to recommend another book that you might find interesting.
It was written in the 1970's but is still very relevant to today.

"On next to nothing - a guide to survival today" by Thomas and Susan Hinde.

    Copies from Amaz*n from 1p :)

2t hope you aren't too stiff and sore this am. SHTF here this week. Both OH and I have flu. I'd never have believed how much it has knocked me for 6. Apart from the cough I'm now over the illness, but the tiredness is all consuming. Expecting the littlies to get it next week, poor things. Have used up a lot of stores so will have to restock at some point when I'm strong enough. Until then I can just about stagger to the kettle and back. Hope no one else gets it.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

esmf73, I hope that your children manage to avoid the flu and you and your OH are soon "Fighting fit!"

I don't know how I feel about flu jabs but perhaps 4-5 years ago they convinced me I should get one annually as I fall into a vulnerable group. So far so good. It probably helps that I don't go out in a lot of company as much as anything.

Medication also affects my immune system which is compromised. It was good to know Mum and myself were there for each other when poorly but now if I really was hit for six it could be difficult being alone.

Our last bout of flu must have been around 20 years ago and around Christmas time. I remember us being huddled around an open fire, wrapped in blankets, coughing and spluttering watching Gone with the Wind and it was the first time it was shown on British TV so it was a big event.

So I do realise the difference between flu and a very bad cold. The open fire gives a clue as to how long ago it was.

So many have had flu or the Norovirus, its been a bad few months for many.

My umbilical cord is connected again! Spent most of yesterday evening on the 'phone with a gentleman from the Indian continent after intermittent line interference and broadband dropping out. I'd already performed every check known to man and knew it was a BT thing and nothing to do with my own equipment . I couldn't understand his accent and I felt embarrassingly like that objectionable woman off Little Britain - 'Say what?' Don't you just love foreign call centres...
Anyhow all well today (so far). Sad, isn't it how much it can throw us when one of our modern day conveniences fails. We can prep all we want but I don't think any of us can truly know what the impact would be on our mental health alone, if it all went haywire...
Meanwhile back in Bronte country it's quite mild and the birds are singing their hearts out under the illusion it's Spring :(
I'm putting all my woolly hats away (till tomorrow anyway:rotfl:)

We have had snow on high ground overnight with more forecast later today and tomorrow.
  • I have a copy of 'On next to nothing' too, it's a useful little book. Given the interest in useful books, would it be at all useful to list the ones in our collections that might interest all of us? If the prices are as low as 1p it might be a good time to add to the library of knowledge and reccomendations from fellow preppers are reliable, if anyone would like I'll post the best of my collections titles later on,Cheers Lyn xxx.

Still cold but no sign of the snow...yet. A light blue sky too.:)

It won't last but for now the brown envelope that I was dreading has dropped on the mat and all is well.

So one problem taken care of temporarily...

Another problem over my home contents policy is taking more of an age to sort or has been.

I took a policy out but cancelled within 24 hours. I found a policy that was cheaper elsewhere.

I had to pay by credit card. The policy was cancelled but they still took the money.

I was getting the Credit card company to chase the money back then they decided they wouldn't/couldn't after various letters and phonecalls.

So back to the insurance company, today they are sending a refund by cheque.

So eventually at least that will be paid off the card. Relief all round...a £100 is a £100! Not that I benefit as all that is happening is that I don't owe anything but I get nothing to spend.

Have been to the accident and emergency and thank goodness nothing is broken. But I have to wear a sling for a week then go back and have it checked out again. Meanwhile I am on muscle relaxants and painkillers and have to take Laprazole to protect my stomach...the docs are paranoid here about painkillers damaging your stomach, but better safe than sorry.
I walked into A and E with a temporary sling I made from a scarf as it was the only thing that took the pain in my shoulder off. The doctor came to see me immediately and sent me to xray, then back to the doctor. Gave me a real sling and put it on for me. Very caring and considerate and efficient and I was in and out in just under an hour altogether. Excellent!

Now going to rest as the painkillers have made me sleepy. I am supposed to be going out tonight to a birthday party but not sure if I will go or not. Will see how my OH feels.

Just seen a new comment by Piers Corbyn the weather man...he seems to think that the cold/snow will hit Sunday/Monday then continue into the extreme blizzards, in Europe, the UK and in America. He says the storm hitting the USA now is nothing compared to what is coming!
