  • Hi CRAIGY - Greetings to the Prince of Belfast and smellie chicken from the Lurcher of Hampshire!!! I think you would have to put the grains through a few times to get to a flour consistency but there's no reason why it shouldn't work perfectly well, Cheers Lyn xxx.

BBB Do you have a coffee grinder? If you do, then you have a grain mill! Cheers Lyn x.

actually that is a brilliant idea for anyone storing wheat as a wheat grinder would tell the tale of your wheat stores to any raiders, a coffee grinder is something leftover from the pre-shtf world if you see what i mean

Have a look at this link...a rare chance to see Athens and Crete covered in snow..

    http://www.keeptalkinggreece.com/2013/01/08/athens-in-grip-of-snowflakes/

We have been lucky, it is sunny and dry despite the fact it is absolutely freezing outside. I have never put the washing on the line so fast and I have undies, winter tights, vest, woolly jumper, fleece lined neoprene trousers and boxing boots lined with fur LOL It is bitter and we are going to minus four tonight. It is expected to warm up a bit on Thursday, which I am looking forward to.

We had a new hot water tank put in a couple of months ago and we now have a pressure valve leak into the boiler room for the central heating. Great joy, they have to drain the system in order to mend the valve so its a good job we are not reliant on it for the heating , because we are using the open fire as the heating oil is too expensive to buy. The hot water will still work on the immersion heater for now. At least the water is going down the drain in the boiler room and it is not dangerous in any way. I think its caused by the water board as they keep messing with the water pressure, last year we got flaming water pipe leaks because of it.
This site is quite good for the volcano/space/ earthquake reports. Now and again they get too political for me but they have some very up to date reports on the state of the earth on there.

Glad we are stocked up with food and fuel as I am still worried we might get snow. Even if we don't its due to get to force 8 winds again tonight here.

When we caught the ferry to the mainland for Christmas we noticed they were completing an oil drilling rig on the docks. They are exploring the gas and oil reserves off the Ionian islands first before the rest of Greece. Already the Turks are threatening Greece with ''action'' if they start the drilling. It looks like its going to get pretty nasty with words before anything else happens and it could well blow up out of all proportion.

Yes, we seem to get more than our share of crisis situations besides the financial one in Greece. Still, I think it makes me stronger and more of a survivor learning to cope with all the things that get slung at us. At least I have my other half on board with me and he is very practical about the prepping we do. He comes up with great ideas and is good at making things out of next to nothing. I am not worried about the future, whatever happens I will cope with it. We survived last year and came out smiling...and it was the hardest year we have ever had to cope with one way or another. It was the longest hottest summer we have ever had , sticking at 42 plus for months on end and no relief from rain or a cooler day. Now we are in the torrential rain for days/dry and sunny but freezing pattern again that we had last year. Bring on the thermals till April then it will be bikini time again....

I have just been listening to a report an Al-Jezeera about the Greek people returning to the land. They know they cannot depend on the government so they are going back to their villages and growing their own :j I think thats wonderful and I hope it works for them - people power!

Actually they are doing it as they no longer have the money to survive without growing their own. Pensioners are living on around 350 euros a month and no unemployment is being paid if you claimed in the past. If you are employed the minimum wage is around 3 euros an hour if your employer actually gives you your pay. Many were not paid for working all summer this year. I know of six or seven families who had their lawn and pool dug up and put in veggies and raise chickens on that land now.

There has just been a 5.9 earthquake in the Aegean sea...centred in Turkey but felt all over Mainland Greece.

I posted this on another forum but it is relevant here; I first read about Savory in a article in the permiculture magazine by somone living in the very south of Spain; arging that the permie fetish with tree planting is inappropriate in dry season climates.

    http://www.savoryinstitute.com/

It would be very relevant to people trying to renovate old terraces.

The other person who has written lots of interesting stuff on dry land growing is Jeavons in his "How to grow more food than you ever thought in less land than you ever thought." He has picked up on ideas from Pueblo Indians etc.
