You could try putting a ping pong ball or a little bath toy--anything that floats--in the water bowl; folk with fish ponds do that to stop the tops getting completely frozen as once you lift said object, the seal is broken & the ice cracks easily.

I saw that idea a couple of years ago and gave it a try.

I thought it meant the ball would be blown around the bowl of water, stopping the ice from forming.

Was surprised when I went out and found it frozen solid in the middle of the ice.

Didn't realize you had to lift it out and then crack the ice until I read your post!

Doh! That is my Muh! moment as we call them in our house.

2T, would sites like Approved Foods or similar ship out to where you live? I know Approved Foods do a lot of Gluten free stuff quite cheap.

they do ship to a lot of EU countries so Greece may be on the list, well worth a look.

I will say this thread is proving invaluable to me as my sister has just moved into a van in a friends woodland. It's an ex-army ambulance which she's converting into living space. Of course that means that she's in rather reduced circumstances and we're going to have to look at various alternatives, efficient solar lighting for winter - gas fridge and cooker - wood burning stove - insulation etc. But good for her. She's got support from people who've done the conversion jobs before and it should lead to a good 'off grid' lifestyle. She's getting a pressure cooker for Christmas and some self sufficiency books. Must suggest the bubble wrap insulation to her for her windows.

    Blimey!

I guess that can't be much larger than a prison cell (not that I have ever seen one thank god but have watched Porridge a few times, oh, and Within These Walls (loved Googie Withers, showing my age now). ;)

Just found this which is quite interesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtJ4FMA87Xs&feature=player_embedded#!

I am doing a load of red onion marmalade, can i use a normal steel stock pot to make it?

    CTC

Do not put acid foods in aluminium, copper or iron. Stainless steel is fine.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • CTC - stainless steel should be fine, I think it's aluminium that is wrong with acidy things. Red Onion Marmalade sounds soooooo yummy!!!!!

DRONID - inspirational post, hope your sister enjoys to the full the opportunity to live her own way. Think narrow boat and that should give you ideas for converting the van. If you google 'The Moneyless Man' you will find a chap called Mark Boyle who lives in a very small caravan and did at least a year not using money for any reason, just foraged or bartered or freegled for everything, pretty inspirational and possibly a source of very adaptable ideas. Keep us in on the loop and let us know how she gets on, Cheers Lyn xxx.

OMG! The SHTF, you have tons of washing up to do and can't find the sink plug, don't have a w/up bowl and have tons of stuff to soak, try this:
